The National Coordinator of the Coalition of Democratic Election Observers (CODEO), Albert Arhin, has voiced concerns over appointing individuals with political affiliations to the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to him, it is important to maintain the integrity of the EC, stressing that appointees should be impartial and free from political influence.
Arhin argued that the credibility of the EC is crucial and that commissioners must remain neutral to safeguard the Commission’s reputation.
Speaking on 3FM, he stated, “When you are appointed to the EC, you must be beyond any political coloration and should not have anything to do with politics.
‘This is essential for strengthening the integrity and sincerity of the Commission.”
He further advised that while individuals may have their political beliefs, these should not influence their duties at the Commission.
He cautioned the EC to act in a manner that ensures public trust and confidence, warning that even the perception of bias could damage the C
ommission’s credibility.
‘People were saying that well, when it comes to the results, the release and the calculation or whatever, a commissioner cannot have any influence but they are forgetting that perception alone is enough to let the people know that no, this thing is not genuine,’ Albert Arhin added.
