Long awaited NW regional league kickstart in a ‘mad-rush’

The 2023 North West Regional Football League started on Sunday, June 4, 2023, in Bamenda, after several controversies surrounding the competition for months.

The competition which is aimed to secure a place in the National Interpoles started in the region with 14 matches played on the opening day.

There was no official launching ceremony, unlike other regions, where the first day of play is usually colorful.

The scanty nature of the fields during the matches on Sunday was a clear example of how the fans and population of the region have lost interest in the competition.

In other regions like the South West, Littoral, and Centre, the competition started about 2 months ago and some clubs are already on day 9 matches.

It is reported that many regional league players in the North West region are in competition without licenses. The unprofessional nature of the competition could also be seen in the dressing of players and the poor officiating style by match officials.

Fans and football lovers in the region have continued to blame the North West FECAFOOT president, Mbigha Felix, and his executive for failing to acquire licenses for the clubs on time.

Mbigha, who doubles as the Mayor of Bamenda I council has also been criticized on several occasions for ‘mixing politics with football’.

“There’s no good field in Bamenda because he wants that everything should remain in his village Bamendankwe. Look at where children play football, a professional league of this nature. This man is really killing football in this region,” a fan lamented at C.S Futru on Sunday.

During day 1 of the matches, which took place at four different earthly fields, a total of 43 goals were scored.

13 matches have been scheduled for Tuesday, June 6, just a day after. Many club officials and players have been grumbling on social media platforms, advocating that a single day of rest is insufficient.

Belo council receives lone award among Councils in North West Region

The Belo Council in the Boyo Division of the North West Region was the only council from the region to receive an award at the just-ended 2023 edition of the Council’s International Economic Forum also known in French as Journées économiques internationales des municipalités, JEICOM.

The awards were given during the closing ceremony of the forum on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Yaounde Conference Center.

According to Mayor Ngong Innocent who was there to receive the prize on behalf of his council, the award is a compensation of the people of Belo for their hard work and persistence.

“This prize is going to the youths and people of Belo that are working very hard in producing potatoes, beans, honey, and tea in the Ndawara tea factory. It tells you what our farmers are able to produce. All of these contribute to food security and by this, we are showing to the world what we are capable of producing,” the Mayor said.

He equally noted that “The prize is an appreciation of their hard work, I want them to know that what they are doing is going to go a long way to help the whole nation of Cameroon and Africa. I want to assure them that so many people out of the country, Belgium, Italy, Vietnam Brazil have appreciated their products and I am calling on them to produce more and be proud of what they are doing”.

Mayor Ngong Innocent also stated that for three days of the Forum, the Belo Council Stand received over 1000 visitors who were excited and happy with their produce. This helped them get international contacts.

Out of 360 Councils that were in competition, the organizing committee awarded the top five councils at the event, with the Belo Council ranked in the fifth position.

During the forum, stakeholders including councils, the government, foreign investors, and local businessmen had as their main aim to brainstorm ways to empower municipalities, foster digitalization, tackle food security, hygiene, and sanitation, develop tourism, and promote wood processing amongst other projects.

Naturcold syrup Kills six-year-old in Douala

Naturcold, the deadly syrup, banned by the Ministry of Public Health has claimed another life.

A six-year-old child died after consuming the banned drug prescribed to the parents by medics at the Bassa Health Centre in Douala on May 24, 2023. Unfortunately, the health of the child deteriorated.

He was rushed to the Douala general hospital days later where doctors have been battling to save his life. The child reportedly succumbed to death on Sunday, June 4.

The medic who prescribed the banned Naturcold syrup has been arrested. He is currently detained at the 4th District Police Station.

The child’s parents are proceeding with arrangements to bury their child.

Despite repeated warnings of the danger of this Naturcold syrup that killed six children in the North West region and caused the death of others in the South West region as well as other regions, many are still shocked at the comportment of this parent who still went ahead to procure the syrup for their child.

Some medical doctors who ought to be life savers are instead those invoking death with their unprofessional behaviors by prescribing contraband medicines to patients even when they are aware these drugs are dangerous.

US party to choose presidential candidate: Patrick Herminie announces plan to compete

The President of the United Seychelles (US) party, Patrick Herminie, has announced he will put his candidacy within his party to stand as a presidential candidate in the 2025 elections.

Herminie made the announcement in the second part of the 36th Annual Congress of the US at the International Conference Centre of Seychelles (ICCS) on Saturday.

This comes after a resolution adopted by the Central Committee in the first part of the Congress. The resolution was to launch the process for the selection of the candidates for the 2025 elections. This is a process that will take up to three to six months. The confirmation of the candidates will be announced in an extraordinary congress next year.

“The congress has put an obligation on us to launch the process to choose our candidates for the presidential and national assembly elections. This is an invitation for all members who feel they are capable to come forward and submit their candidatures,” said Herminie.

He then announced that “today I would like to tell you that I personally have the intention of submitting my candidature.”

Herminie told supporters that “we should not be afraid because the new US will judge you on your performance and hard work and not on the opinion of one or two individuals.”

The sub-article 5.17, 31.2 and 31.3 of the party’s constitution addresses its internal process to select candidates for both the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Seychelles presidential elections are expected to take place in 2025 and United Seychelles.

Presidential elections in Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, take place every five years.

There are currently three main political parties in the country – Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (Seychelles Democratic Alliance), which is the ruling party, United Seychelles, the main opposition party, and One Seychelles, a smaller party.

In the last elections in October 2020, President Wavel Ramkalawan, from the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa, won 54.9 percent of the votes followed by Danny Faure of the United Seychelles with 43.5 percent.

The LDS won 20 out of the 26 directly elected seats in the National Assembly and five proportionately elected seats.

Seychelles to explore new ways to minimise plastic waste

Seychelles’ environment ministry continues to explore new ways to address the issue of plastic waste through new restrictions to be imposed on the use, possession, and commercial distribution of plastics and plastic products still in circulation, a high government official said on Monday.

Environment minister Flavien Joubert made the announcement in his message to commemorate World Environment Day, which is marked on June 5, annually.

In his message for World Environment Day, Joubert said that today is a good day to “remind ourselves that at this very moment, plastics and their hazardous additives continue to warm the climate, damage human health, and destroy ecosystems.”

“Plastics are not only found in landfills, but, they are also present in the oceans and in our bodies,” said Joubert.

Under the campaign ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the theme for this year’s Environment Day focuses on solutions to plastic pollution.

“Whilst not a producer, Seychelles is an importer of plastics and plastic products. The protection of our natural environment including the marine environment is, therefore, crucial and remains one of our top priorities as we depend on it to sustain our economy through the fisheries and tourism industries,” said Joubert.

In 2017, Seychelles’ government placed a ban on the importation and sales of plastic bags, and plastic utensils including cups, forks, Styrofoam takeaway boxes, and plates. This was followed by a ban on single-use plastic straws in June 2019 and on balloons in 2021.

“I call upon every one of you, to reduce our plastic usage, recycle and dispose of plastic waste responsibly. Let us come together as a community, as a nation to tackle this issue,” said Joubert.

Aside from addressing the plastic issue, the Seychelles government is making strides to move towards a paperless economy, with one of the biggest achievements being at the airport.

In August 2021, Seychelles announced the roll-out of paperless entry for international arrivals in Seychelles. As of November 2022, citizens of Seychelles and permit holders starting their travel from Seychelles were required to submit embarkation information digitally as they prepare to exit the country.

In a bid to encourage recycling and minimise the amount of waste in Seychelles’ landfills, the country encourages the redeeming of PET and glass bottles as well as aluminium cans.
