Yaounde: Incumbent Paul Biya was declared the winner of the 2025 presidential elections, with 53.66%, the Constitutional Council announced. This comes after long weeks of malpractices, rigging, and arrests.
According to Cameroon News Agency, this announcement came a day after the opposition leader, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, called on Cameroonians to protest against the Council’s biased proclamation. At least six people died, and more than 100 were arrested across Cameroon, with officials stating that those arrested were vandals.
The Constitutional Council reported that opposition leader and former Minister, Bakary, received 35.19% of the votes.
In terms of regional results, Biya secured 34.61% in Adamaoua while Bakary had 50.33%. In the Centre region, Biya obtained 70.14% against Bakary’s 21.62%. In Est, Biya received 73.88% of the votes compared to Bakary’s 19.82%. In Extreme-Nord, Biya garnered 45.93% while Bakary had 42.34%. In Littoral, Bakary led with 64.59% as Biya trailed with 20.99%.
Furthermore, in
the Nord region, Biya managed 38.78% while Bakary had a slight lead with 43.51%. In Nord-Ouest, Biya achieved a significant majority with 86.31% against Bakary’s 5.21%. In Ouest, Bakary received 46.76% as compared to Biya’s 38.61%. In Sud, Biya dominated with 90.86% while Bakary had 6%. Lastly, in Sud-Ouest, Biya secured 68.79% of the votes, with Bakary obtaining 22.79%.
