Lightning kills 15-year-old girl at Odumase

The tragic death of a 15-year-old student of the Odumase Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Primary and Junior High School in the Sunyani West Municipality has thrown the family into shock and mourning.

Lightning, which accompanied a downpour that hit Odumase, the Municipal capital on Saturday, May 13, 2023, struck and killed Evelyn Agyenim Boateng, a form two student.

According to some tenants, the sad incident happened around 1630 hours, when the deceased was preparing a meal for the family and the body had since been deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

During a visit to the family house, Mr Kwadwo Owusu Aduomi, the father of the deceased could not control his tears as he narrated the story to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

‘I received a distress call that my daughter is unwell, but when I rushed to the hospital, I saw her body lying prostrate at the mortuary with multiple bruises around the breast area,’ he stated.

Dzifa Gomashie thanks delegates and party faithful

Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South, has expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ketu South constituency.

This follows her landslide victory in the party’s parliamentary primary in which she polled 1,545 votes to beat her closest contender Foga Nukunu, who secured 945 votes with Jim Morti obtaining 26 votes.

Madam Gomashie, a former actress and deputy Creative Arts Minister thanked all delegates, party faithful and executives for their support to her over the years and the confidence reposed in her to have retained her as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general election.

She promised to work even harder as she retains her position to represent the people in Parliament.

Vice President of Republic expected in Zaire province

Angola’s Vice President Esperança da Costa is expected Tuesday in Mbanza Kongo, northern Zaire province, to chair the 1st Ordinary Session of the National Multi-Sector Commission for Safeguarding of the 2023-World Cultural Heritage.

According to a note released Monday by the Vice Presidency’s Press Office, the meeting will analyse the current state of the monuments and historical sites of Mbanza Kongo.

The session will also review the proposals of the International Festival of Culture programme (FESTIKONGO) and the Commission’s Action Plan for the 2023 period.

Other aspects include the implementation of UNESCO’s recommendations on the Management Plan of this World Heritage city.

The Vice-President of the Republic will also visit sites of interest to the Commission.

Updated by Presidential Dispatch 93/23, of 3 May, according to the press release, the commission aims to ensure the development of identified actions to preserve, enhance and manage the cultural heritage, in accordance with the conventions and international treaties on the matter, to which Angola is a party.

This include the Convention on World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted in 1972 at the United Nations General Conference on Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO).

Created under the Presidential Order no. 25/18, of 5 March, the National Multi-sector Commission for Safeguarding the World Cultural Heritage is responsible for promoting the implementation of conservation programmes and the participative management of the cultural heritage.

The objective is to adopt special measures to monitor the national cultural heritage of exceptional universal value.

The Historic Centre of Mbanza kongo, capital of the former Kingdom of Kongo, joined the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list on 8 July 2017.

Angola presents business opportunities in Germany

The Business and investment opportunities in Angola were displayed to German businesspeople, during the Angola-Germany Business Forum, ANGOP learnt this Monday.

Addressing the event, the minister of Economy and Planning (MEP), Mário Caetano João, presented the performance of the Angolan economy and the strategic vision of the National Development Plan, emerging from the 2050 long-term strategy.

The minister, who was cited by a press release, also presented his commitment to improving the business environment, the plans to promote grain production (Planagrão), animal protein production (Planapecuária) and fisheries (Planapesca).

The minister explained that the macroeconomic stability that the country is experiencing and the commitment to the diversification of the economy are only being possible, because of one factor.

According to him, the sector did not manage to finance over 40 projects until 2019. But the number rose significantly from 2020 reaching to more than a thousand projects until 2022.

Mário Caetano João appealed to businesspeople to invest in Angola, because, in addition to its internal market and productive potential, it is a space that represents a SADC’s market gateway, comprising more than 300 million consumers and annually moves 750 billion dollars.

The CEO of Private Investment and Export Promotion Agency, AIPEX, Lello Francisco, presented the tax incentives and the facilities and support that the Agency offers to those who want to invest in the country.

While, the chairman of the Executive Committee of the Angolan Debt and Stock Exchange (BODIVA), Walter Pacho, says that another way of investing in Angola, in addition to the process of privatizing public companies, is in the agrarian sector, through stock Exchange.

In turn, the delegate for the German Economy in Angola, Vandré Spellmeier, considers that the active presence of investors at the forum reveals the high German interest in the Angolan market, in the areas that correspond to the pillars of the strategic vision of the PDN 2023/2027.

Germany and Angola, being two traditional partners, have projects that focus on the construction of infrastructures for the production of electricity, the pharmaceutical industry and in the field of Hospital Construction and Management.

Available information indicates that trade between Angola and Germany, in 2020, was estimated at 120 million euros.

MPs to pass draft law on Freedom of Assembly and Demonstration

National Assembly will discuss and vote in generality on May 25 the Draft Law on Freedom of Assembly and Demonstration, a legislative initiative of the Parliamentary group of the opposition UNITA party.

The Bill is expected to respond to an imperative of democracy and to allow a truly effective implementation of the rule “Freedom of Assembly and Demonstration of Article 47 of the Constitution”.

On the other hand, approval of Draft Law will consolidate the constitutional transition to the democratic regime started in 1991.

The move will also create practical and effective mechanisms for the effective exercise of fundamental rights and for the consequent implementation of the Constitution and affirmation of the Democratic state.
