?Aduana Stars falter again as they get thumped by Accra Lions

Aduana Stars missed the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the betPawa Ghana Premier League as they were humbled by the Accra Lions on matchday 31.

Goals from Baba Salifu Apliga, Evans Botchway, and Seidu Bassit ensured victory for Accra Lions, who returned to winning ways after losing three consecutive times.

Aduana Stars, despite their loss, still stay on top with 52 points, a point ahead of Bechem United, who won their encounter against Legon Cities.

Aduana Stars struggled at the start of the match, with Accra Lions dominating possession and looking the more likely side to take the lead.

They did take the lead in the 29th minute after Apliga struck a nice free-kick outside the Aduana Stars’ penalty box, and a huge deflection ensured it went past goalkeeper Joseph Addo.

Aduana Stars responded with some good chances later in the first half, but the Accra Lions’ defence stood firm and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half was very competitive, with some entertaining football from both sides.

But it was Accra Lions who got the second goal after Evans Botchway finished off a brilliant team move.

Bassit scored the third goal of the game seven minutes later as he delivered a ferocious header past Joseph Addo to ensure an emphatic victory.

Separatists shoot resisting women in Big Babanki

Several women were injured as Separatists who identified themselves as Ambazonia forces targeted women in Big Babanki, a village in Mezam , north west region of Cameroon.

CNA learned that the incident took place on the eve to the country’s National Day celebration, a feast that takes place every May 20.

War levy

On Friday May 19, 2023, some women protested the imposed levy of FCFA 10,000 per male and FCFA 5000 per female. Pleading with the separatists to abolish such monthly levies because the effect of the war has also rendered them poor.

Since 2016, Separatists in the north west and south west regions, are fighting thr central government in a move to create a separate state called Ambazonia.

For the past seven years, the war has caused economic hardship to the population of these regions.

But to make more money and fund the war, a group of Ambazonia separatists have resorted to demanding money on impulse.

A group that has supported this initiative is the Ambazonia Governing Council.

But there has been dissenting voices. The reactions were met with bullets and intimidation.

“As I am writing to you now there is tension in my village Big babanki this criminals are moving from one quarter to the other collecting all the names of the people in that quarter and saying that each person will be paying 10000 for the men and 5000 for women,” a source told CNA.

Those who resisted were shot in the legs while others were vandalised.

The women are being treated in nearby hospitals.

International Museum Day: Seychelles celebrates history, sustainability and well-being

A week-long series of activities were organised by the Seychelles National Museums for all ages to celebrate the 2023 International Museum Day under the theme “Museums, Sustainability and Well-being.”

The International Museum Day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977. Celebrated on May 18, International Museum Day is aimed at increasing public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society.

Every year, museums are invited organise activities to commemorate the International Museum Day and promote museums’ role worldwide, creating unique, free, and fun activities around the theme chosen that are discussed within the community of ICOM specifically for this special day.

The director of National Museums in Seychelles, Beryl Ondiek, told SNA that local museums held public speaking competitions for school children and hosted restoration work at the Tea Tavern located at Morne Blanc during the week-long celebration.

“This year, when we speak of sustainability and well-being, we thought of having activities for primary and secondary school children as they are the next generation so that they can learn about the heritage and history as well as see what they already know. We want our school children to be concerned about and to learn more about our heritage. This is why we invited them to the museum to learn more and then go forth to share it with the public or an audience,” said Ondiek.

She said that “We have a restoration programme through which we are contributing within this biodiversity space that is being protected. As the custodians of our heritage, why don’t we go out and protect this natural heritage that we have?”

During the museum day programme, the public had free access to the National Museum of History and were entertained by live traditional music.

“Through free access to the museum, we were encouraging the public to visit the museum to learn about their heritage and history,” she shared.

Ondiek outlined that though more activities were intensely organised around International Museum Day itself, there are other educational programmes that take place throughout the year. These activities target both children and adults.

“We have a variety of activities planned until December. In June for the International Day of the Environment, for example, we will be hosting a symposium to see how we can help to reduce the amount of waste that is ending in the landfill. The museum is the platform that we can use to deal with topics that are of concern to the government, society, or the public. We can come together to find a solution for these issues,” said Ondiek.
