Angola defends high-quality campaigns to fight against poliovirus outbreaks

Angola has called for the implementation of a quick response and high quality campaigns to deal with the circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) outbreaks.

Angola’s stance was expressed Thursday by the general director of the National Institute for Health Research (INIS), Joana Morais, in her speech delivered at the plenary of the 76th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

The new oral vaccine against type 2 poliomyelitis is the preferred option to control outbreaks of poliovirus derived from of the vaccine.

Joana Morais, who expressed concern about the persistence of outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus, suggested integrating polio vaccination into all health interventions.

The official also suggested other development sectors covering high-risk areas, while the polio be incorporated into the General State Budget (OGE), supplemented with resources mobilised from partners.

The INIS director pointed out four priorities to boost the 2018-2023 polio transition plan.

They are the sustainable reinforcement of routine immunisation, the consolidation of gains in areas of endemic transmission of the Wild Poliovirus, the prevention or immediate response to outbreaks in non-endemic areas and early identification of vaccine-derived poliovirus and ensure an immediate quality response.

Joana Morais also pointed the priority areas, which include strengthening national capacities in the field of immunisation, surveillance and outbreak response, monitoring and evaluation, operational investigations to improve performance, strengthening reference laboratories, efficient sample management, assistance WHO technique for outbreak response activities and surveillance.

The 76th World Health Assembly, which runs until the 30th of the current month, focuses on global architecture of preparedness and response to public health emergencies, construction of the proposal for an instrument on pandemics and non-communicable diseases.

The assembly seeks to find ways to prevent and control NCDs such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancers, promoting approaches on ways to improve access to healthy food, physical activity and essential medicines.

The agenda also includes the theme of universal health coverage (UHC).

Angola, Italy strengthens historic relations – Overview

The historical, cultural, political, diplomatic relations between Angola and Italy constitute a strong foundation for both countries, and have been strengthened with the state visit by the Angolan President to the European country.

“We are here to seal the ties of friendship and cooperation with Italy,” the Angolan Head of State said at the end of the meeting with his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, on Wednesday, the first day of the visit.

Angolan President João Lourenço expressed the country’s availability to welcome the Italian businesspeople who want to invest in the country’s market.

During two-day visit of João Lourenço to Italy, started on Wednesday, the two States (Angola and Italy) signed several cooperation agreements, particularly in the areas of oil, transport, finance and health.

The main focus went to the agreement signed between Italian company Eni and Angola’s Sonangol, formalised in the presence of the Angolan head of State João Lourenço and the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The Memorandum of Understanding aims to broaden areas of cooperation between the two companies, via studies in the area of agri-business value chain and other decarbonisation sectors.

At the Italian Parliament, João Lourenço met with the leader of the Senate, Ignacio La Russa, and with the president of that sovereign body, Lorenzo Fontana.

On Wednesday, President João Lourenço paid homage in Rome to the Unknown Soldier by laying a wreath at the monument known as “Altar of the Homeland”.

Still on Wednesday evening, João Lourenço was awarded by President Sergio Mattarella with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

On the same occasion, the Angolan Head of State granted the Agostinho Neto Order to his counterpart Sergio Mattarella, as well as to the First Lady, Laura Mattarella.

On Thursday, the last day of the visit, the Angolan Head of State attended the Italy-Angola Economic Forum, organised by the business association Confindustria Assafrica in collaboration with the Private Investment and Export Promotion Agency (AIPEX).

At the meeting, the President of the Republic encouraged the Italian businessmen to invest in different branches of the Angolan economy and their participation in public investment projects.

Also on Thursday, the Angolan Head of State visited the Rome City Hall and the ENI Technological Centre.

This is an advanced centre for science and knowledge that has over 1,000 researchers, some of them Angolans.

More dynamic and diversified cooperation

Angola is Italy’s third sub-Saharan African commercial partner, after South Africa and Nigeria.

The Italian government has considered Angola a priority country for its cooperation strategy in sub-Saharan Africa since 1989.

The two countries formalised diplomatic and cooperation relations on 4 June, 1976 and on 3 August, 1977 signed the Technical Cooperation Agreement, as well as the Memorandum of Intent through which the Joint Commission was created.

Angola and Italy signed the first legal instrument, called the Air Transport Agreement, on April 10, 1976.

Angola and Portugal discuss environment cooperation

Angola on Thursday in Lisbon requested greater sharing of experience with Portugal for the preservation of the environment.

The statement was made by Angola Environment Minister, Ana Paula de Carvalho, following a meeting with her Portuguese counterpart, José Duarte Cordeiro.

Ana Paula de Carvalho said she acknowledges that the country has “much to learn” from the Portuguese experience in terms of preserving the environment, having emphasised that Angola counts on Portugal’s help to meet the multiple challenges ahead.

The two sides decided to continue exchanging experience to deepen relations in terms of environmental protection.

The Angolan minister, who has been on a working mission to the European country since the 23rd of the current month at the invitation of José Duarte Cordeiro, visited several places in Portugal.

During her stay in Portugal, Ana Paula de Carvalho attended the presentation of the iREC Projects – Inovar a Reciclagem and Cascais Smart Pole, as well as a meeting to the Voluntary Carbon Market

Angola presents initiatives to ensure food security

Angola has presented the initiatives to ensure food and nutrition security, regulate the market and positively impact on the supply of basic food products.

This was during the 5th General Assembly of Governors of the African Development Bank started on 22 May in Egypt.

The initiatives are those of the National Plan for the Promotion of Grain Production (PLANAGRÃO) and the National Social Protection System Project, estimated at USD 420 million, aimed to provide cash transfers to some 1.6 million Angolan families.

The State Secretary for the Economy, Ivan dos Santos, who took part in the

event, also highlighted the Programme of Support Production, Diversification of Exports and Substitution of Imports (PRODESI), as a tool for economic diversification and on the Food Reserve (REA), which is being implemented to improve food and nutritional security, supply of basic and essential food products, in the desired quantities.

Ivan dos Santos also stressed the National Strategy for Renewable Energy in Angola, which foresees a 10-fold increase in the country’s electricity production capacity, through the installation of solar parks.

The official also said 1 million families could benefit from around 55,000 megawatts to be produced.

Ivan dos Santos assured that the Government is committed to the programmes, projects and plans to avoid food shortages in the coming years.

Angola is represented by a multi-sector delegation at the 5th General Assembly of the Governors of the African Development ending on 26 May.

The event gathers more than 50 African countries.

Minister calls for harmonisation of Portuguese and national languages

Angolan minister of Culture and Tourism Filipe Zau appealed Friday in Luanda to the member States of the Community of the Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) to promote cooperation between Portuguese and national languages.

Filipe Zau said the objective of the promoting cooperation between Portuguese and national languages is to enhance and ensure scientific research.

Delivering his speech, at the opening of the 2nd Extraordinary Meeting of Ministers of Culture of the CPLP, the official said bilingualism in each country will facilitate the organisation’s mission.

In view of this situation, the minister proposed to those in charge of the International Institute of the Portuguese Language (IILP) – the Executive Secretariat of the CPLP and the focal points – to outline a strategy for implementation of a project that takes into account that aspiration.

The minister defended a greater promotion and dissemination of Portuguese, as a second language, which includes the recognition of the existence of other cultures and languages.

Filipe Zau stated that the community views the culture as a key identity reference and a mean to promote creative industries aimed at employment, income generation and the eradication of poverty.

Meanwhile, he said, the II Extraordinary Meeting will provide an opportunity to assess the degree of implementation of the action plan to boost the exchange.

The one-day meeting is assessing the degree of implementation of the CPLP Multilateral Cultural Cooperation Action Plan (2022-2024) and the “Operational of the Strategic Plan (2022-2026)”.

Huila: ANGOP announces plans for gradual expansion of production centres in municipalities

Angolan News Agency (ANGOP) will soon start a gradual expansion process of its production centres in some municipalities aimed to expand the news coverage to the country’s inland.

The pledge was made by the executive director for Contents of this Media House, José Chimuco, during a meeting with governor of the southern Huila province, Nuno Mahapi.

José Chimuco, who is visiting the southern region (Namibe, Cunene and Huíla), mentioned the municipality of Matala (Huila), which will also be in charge of the others, such as Quipungo, Jamba and Cuvango, as priority.

He also announced plans to create another production centre in Cacula, which will cover the municipalities of Quilengues, Caluquembe and Caconda.

Jose Chimuco requested the intervention of the provincial governor close to the municipal administrations.

ANGOP executive director is carrying out a 14-day tour that covers the provinces of Namibe, Cunene and Huila, as part of preparations for the 6th Expanded Consultative Council of the state-owned media company this year.
