After the disappointing defeat to Cape Verde in Ghana’s first Group B match at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON), some Ghanaian fans are optimistic of a better performance in the next game against Egypt on Thursday.

Cape Verde shocked the Black Stars to a 2-1 defeat last Sunday to occupy the summit of the table with three points while Ghana stayed at the bottom.

Egypt and Mozambique occupy the second and third positions with a point each after their pulsating two all draw in the other Group B encounter.

Unperturbed by the setback, some Ghanaian fans here in Abidjan are looking forward to a massive comeback against Egypt to ensure the team qualifies to the next stage of the competition.

With the national team usually slow starters to tournaments, they believe that the Black Stars can secure three points against the Pharaohs.

Speaking to the media, Kwame Owusu, a Ghanaian said, with a proper lineup for Thursday’s game, Ghana would beat Egypt and qualify to the next stage.

‘We can get three point
s against Egypt and probably beat Mozambique to qualify. The team must just get things right this time,’ he said.

The Chief Drummer for the Black Stars, Joseph Langabel who blamed the players for their abysmal performance in the first game, said there was always room for improvement.

‘This kind of football by the Black Stars is clearly unacceptable. They play as if there is nothing at stake and would at the end, break our hearts,’ he stated.

‘They really need to sit up in the next game, otherwise we would not qualify to the next stage of the competition,’ he stressed.

Afua Serwaa, who was hoping to hit the streets of Abidjan to celebrate Ghana’s victory said, ‘I am sure there would be victories in subsequent games. We must trust the boys to deliver.

‘Dede Ayew and his team must win the next match to compensate Ghanaians for the heartbreak,’ she added.

Meanwhile, in expressing their confidence ahead of the next game, the fans stormed a local restaurant, Maquis Du Val to celebrate ahead of Thursday’s game
.

Numbering over 100, they sang jama songs and other local melodies amidst wild dance moves much to the admiration of staff and patrons of the restaurant.

AFCON 2023: Rigobert Song reflects on difficult opening encounter

The head coach of Cameroon’s senior men’s national team, Rigobert Song reflected on his team’s 1-1 draw with Guinea in their opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday.

The Indomitable Lions had to come from a goal down in the Group C tie after Mohamed Bayo had given the Syli National the lead in the tenth minute.

The numerical advantage after a red card to Guinea’s Francois Kamano counted for something in the second period of the match.

Frank Magri headed Cameroon’s equalizer in the 51st minute to ensure a 1- draw, a scenario Song saw as a tough one.

‘The start of the match was difficult for us, especially in the first 30 minutes. You know how it has been at the start of this tournament; it has always been difficult. We saw how some teams started this tournament.’ Song told journalists after the match.

The former Cameroonian player added that they controlled the game but couldn’t pick all the points.

‘We controlled the flow of the match, but we were not able to score the second
goal of the match to take the victory, I hope to do it in the next match.’

The Cameroonian coach explained that he would correct the mistakes his players made during the clash with Guinea, before their next game which will be against Senegal.

‘We all saw the match, there is a positive part.

‘We will correct the mistakes, and in the next four days the players will know their mission.’

Senegal tops Group C with three points ahead of Cameroon and Guinea both with a point while Gambia is yet to register a point after a game.

ECOWAS Court of Justice is not an electoral dispute arbiter – Head of Legal

Mr Apraku Nketia, the Head of Legal Services and Research, ECOWAS Court of Justice (CCJ), says although the ECOWAS Court of Justice plays a crucial role in adjudicating electoral disputes, it is not an electoral arbiter.

He said the Court jurisdiction and functions cover a broader spectrum of issues related to the interpretation and application of the ECOWAS Treaty and other legal instruments within the region.

He said the ECOWAS Court could not just be an electoral dispute arbiter and that if a member state, group of people or individuals felt that the conduct of the electoral process had in a way affected their human rights, the protocols and treaties would apply.

However, ‘the court cannot be an electoral arbiter, simpliciter,’ Mr Nketia said at a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to climax a week-long sensitisation visit to Ghana.

Currently, over 400 judgements have been delivered by the ECOWAS Court of Justice with 131 outstanding judgements have not been enf
orced.

‘We have a lot of protocols that govern the conduct of elections in member countries. And these protocols are binding on member states. If in the preparation and at the conduct of the election, if a member state is not actually complying with some of the provisions of this protocol, it will amount to maybe violation of the rights of a group of people or an individual. If you can converse your argument before the court with solid evidence, then the court can grant you an audience,’ he said.

He said the desire of the court was to see all judgment rendered by the courts being implemented.

Mr Nketiah said when the court gave its judgement, it was up to political leaders to implement those judgements, and that without the implementation of those judgements, the issues would still linger on, and the relevance of the court would not be felt in such instances.

As part of measures to ensure the full implementation of judgements, he said the ECOWAS Court of Justice had been engaging stakeholders like the min
istries responsible for the implementation of judgements like Ghana’s Attorney General’s Department.

He noted that, ‘there are other high-level engagements that the management of the court together with the ECOWAS Commission did to have the decisions of the court implemented. Internally, the court has also instituted some measures like appointing officers who are responsible particularly for the implementation of the judgment.’

‘The political will rest with the leadership of the community, various countries, as to how they would

take and prioritize the implementation processes. It is solely up to them. Ours is persuasive and theirs is the decision-making,’ he added.

He said the success of an international tribunal should not be limited to the implementation of its judgements alone, and that some of its judgements had informed policy formulation across the entire community.

Mr Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, Deputy Minister, Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (Political and Economic), who spoke earlier at
the opening of a sensitisation forum, said the ECOWAS Court of Justice stood as a cornerstone institution with a pivotal role in upholding the rule of law, promoting human rights and fostering regional integration.

He said over the years Ghana had demonstrated unwavering support for the ECOWAS Court of Justice through active participation in its proceedings, adherence to its decisions and collaboration with the Court’s mechanisms.
