Asia Pacific View: Foreigners looking for the most practical Smart Technology at the 2024 World Intelligence Expo

Bionic robots that speak both Chinese and English can have the same skin and nails as humans? A flying car powered solely by wind can have a maximum payload of 160 kg? A smart wheelchair can control its operation with just the ‘mind’? Kevin and Daria, two foreign bloggers, have experienced during the World Intelligence Expo held in Tianjin how the artificial intelligence can empower people’s future lives in industries such as technology, trade, logistics and cultural tourism.

With the theme of ‘Intelligent Travel Empowering Future’, the Expo integrates exhibitions, experiences and events, attracting more than 550 exhibitors and institutions from all over the world, including more than 70 well-known enterprises such as Huawei, Alibaba, Baidu and Danfoss, and 57 universities and research institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nankai University and Tianjin University.

The Expo set up 10 major themes such as artificial intelligence, intelligent networked vehicles, intelligent manufacturing
and robots, covering the frontier hot spots of the intelligent industry. A number of cutting-edge new technologies, new products, and new experiences from all over the world were showcased centrally, reminding people that technology will completely change the lifestyles in the future.

At the exhibition site, various intelligent robot products such as humanoid robots, bionic robots, and intelligent robot dogs interact with the audience on the spot. They are no longer fantasies in science fiction or movies, but play an important role in monitoring, rescue, cultural tourism and other fields.

In the low-altitude economic exhibition area, a number of drones, flying vehicles, and aerospace technology companies collectively display advanced technology products. A low-altitude aircraft shaped like a helicopter brought by the German company Tensor can independently complete cargo transportation, takeoff and landing according to pre-set routes according to the instructions.

Robotic arms incorporating technologies su
ch as 5G, IoT, edge computing, rocker robotics, and artificial intelligence can shoot high-frame-rate video and support autofocus, achieving effects that cannot be achieved in traditional shooting modes. Viewers can also have more novel experiences with the help of smart technology.

The Expo also hosted three major events such as the Asia-Pacific Robotics World Cup Tianjin International Invitational, the World Intelligent Driving Challenge, and the International Intelligent Sports Conference. A number of technological achievements and innovative applications were demonstrated in the competitions.

For exhibiting companies, this Expo is also an opportunity to further promote the transformation of enterprises to information technology and digitalization, and will also bring huge business opportunities.

Data governance key to success of digitisation agenda- Deputy Minister

Mr Charles Acheampong, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digitalization, says the prioritisation of data governance is crucial to the success of the government’s digitalization agenda.

Government investment in IT systems and technologies, he said, would best maximise the use of data by unlocking its potential, promoting data sharing, analytics, and reuse for the public good.

The Deputy Minister said this on Friday in Accra at a validation workshop on the Ghana National Data Strategy.

The validation workshop brought together stakeholders from government, the private sector, academia, civil society, and startups within the digital ecosystem to shape the trajectory of the nation’s data-driven future.

The Ministry of Communication and Digitalization, through the Data Protection Commission, is developing Ghana’s National Data Strategy.

The strategy includes financial assistance and support from the Data Economy Programme at GIZ, the African Union, the European Commission, technical assistance from Smart A
frica, and technical support from the Data-Pop Alliance.

Mr Acheampong said the purpose of the strategy was, among others, to develop both basic and economy-specific infrastructure and create trust mechanisms for both the public and private sectors of the economy.

He said Ghana was one of the implementation countries to foster digital skills, including data skills, for the Smart Africa Digital Academy.

‘A good data governance strategy includes a well-designed governance programme involving a governance team to steer the affairs and develop the data management standards and data stewards to implement, monitor, and enforce the related policies and procedures,’ he said.

Mr Acheampong, also the Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, urged all institutions managing key data assets to contribute meaningfully to the deliberations for effective outcomes.

‘We hope that your deliberations will be fruitful and that we will be able to deliver the planned strategy as soon as possible,’ he said.

The Deputy Ministe
r assured participants of the government’s commitment to the project to develop a comprehensive working document.

Ms Patricia Poku, Executive Director, Data Protection Commission, said the strategy would strengthen the continent’s digitization effort for a single African market.

She said the validated document would be sent to the Ministry and further transmitted to Parliament for deliberations and action.

Ms Poku said Ghana would be the second country to develop the strategy with the quest to ensure consistency and standardisation of data management within the African sphere.

Ms Anna Lixi, Head of Section for Governance and Security, European Union Delegation to Ghana, said the strategy would facilitate economic and social innovation by ensuring the effective use of data.

Mr Bjom-Soren Gigler, Head, Data Economy at Data Governance in Africa Initiative, GIZ, stated that the document would protect citizens from potential risks associated with data use, describing ‘data as oxygen for the digital economy.’

M
s Thelma Quaye, Digital Infrastructure, Skills, and Empowerment at the Smart Africa Secretariat, said the document would be good for its effective implementation.

Tema West MCE calls for collaboration to solve sanitation challenges

Ms. Felicia Edem Attipoe, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has called for a collaborative effort in the fight against environmental sanitation challenges in the municipality.

Ms. Attipoe said environmental sanitation issues were a daunting challenge affecting every aspect of human life, ranging from the economy to education, health, and employment, among others.

She made the call while reading her sessional address during the general assembly meeting of the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA).

She said that to help address some of the issues, the assembly was ensuring that 80 percent of households within the municipality registered with accredited waste service providers for the collection of refuse.

She added that the assembly had added additional waste service providers to ensure efficient and effective collection of solid waste to reduce filth in the various communities, stressing that the assembly had already taken steps to ensure all households subscribe to service providers for refuse
collection.

The MCE mentioned that the assembly would also demolish structures on the sewer lines in Tema Community Two for easy access and to help with maintenance work.

Ms. Attipoe explained that there would be community mobilisation for cleaning the environment under the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ campaign while implementing environmental sanitation by-laws as other measures to address the sanitation challenges.

Touching on human resources management, she noted that the assembly would enhance its resource capacity to offer quality service delivery to the residents and stakeholders’ interests within the municipality.

She added that training would be provided for 30 revenue collectors in revenue mobilisation strategies, report writing skills and techniques, and functions of local governance for administrative and human resources officers, while cleaners would be trained in cleaning and housekeeping techniques.

She mentioned that out of the 289 staff of the assembly, 161 were on government payroll,
91 were on the assembly’s internally generated revenue, and 30 were revenue commission collectors.

The MCE added that three percent of the district assembly common fund, worth GHs 58,500.00, has been disbursed to 25 persons with disabilities.

Call off strike before we hear your case- Labour Commission to CETAG

The National Labour Commission has refused to hear the case between the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) and the government for refusing to call off its strike.

This is because the Commission said CETAG had flouted its directive to call off the strike.

The National Labour Commission (NLC), on Thursday, June 20, after meeting with stakeholders, directed CETAG members to call off their strike.

Both parties were to appear before the Commission on June 27 for a hearing, but the meeting could not come on because of CETAG’s inability to call off the strike.

Mr Prince Obeng-Himah, President of CETAG, said in an interview that the Association could not call off the strike because the employer was to present evidence of compliance with their concerns to the court on June 26, which it failed.

He said the Court had scheduled July 18, 2024, for both parties to appear for hearings.

The strike is aimed at pushing the government to meet CETAG’s demands, including the payment of one month’s s
alary to each member for additional duties performed in 2022 and the application of agreed rates of allowances payable to public universities to deserving CETAG members.

Mr Benjamin Arthur, the Chief Executive, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission(FWSC) on Friday June 14, 2024, during a press briefing, described the indefinite strike by CETAG as illegal and borne out of bad faith.

The FWSC said CETAG was in breach of the agreement signed with the government on May 22, 2023, where both parties agreed to resort to the NLC to address any disagreement.
