The deputy governor for Political, Social and Economic sector of Huambo province, Angelino Elavoco, acknowledged on Thursday the need for better digital and financial education of citizens, with the aim to combat cybercrime.
The official made the statement at the launch of the third phase of the ‘Digital Citizen’ project financed by the Interbank Services Company (EMIS), which plans to raise awareness among at least 60,000 local citizens by 2025.
Angelino Elavoco spoke of the importance for citizens to know how to use digital payment instruments better, in order to avoid criminal actions that could jeopardize their assets.
He pointed out that the ‘Digital Citizen’ project comes at a good time, in a context in which internet scams are increasingly gaining ground, with the need to combat them through better digital and financial education.
He added that the EMIS initiative will, among other things, raise the level of financial and digital literacy of citizens, and will be a positive opportunity for the for
malization of the national economy.
Angelino Elavoco said the local government believes that a strong and dynamic economy is accompanied by a robust financial system, with greater inclusion of citizens in the use of products and services available on the market.
He stressed that there are indicators that Angola is 70 percent below in terms of digital literacy, which means that the adult population does not have the capacity to understand how it works, while young people do not understand the inherent risks.
The ‘Digital Citizen’ project implemented in 2022, the first and second phases and raised awareness among more than 500,000 citizens in Benguela and Luanda.
