Burkina: Visual artists denounce violence against internally displaced women.

Ouagadougou, March 13, 2023 (AIB) – Burkinabè visual artists started an exhibition last Friday entitled “Regards femmes”, focusing on violence against internally displaced women.

“These works depict our current situation in Burkina. I mainly work with displaced women and children who have had to leave their areas for the city and who are not often well received,” said exhibitor Mariam Sougué.

According to her, the day of March 8 is not only djandjoba (folkore), but a platform to claim women’s rights and raise awareness.

“This exhibition brings women together around women’s issues to share with them what touches and offends their sensitivity,” said Mariam Sougué.

On one of these paintings, the artist denounces sexual violence against internally displaced women. She shows a pregnant woman and a man probably the author of this act, on the run.

According to Tebda Talato Agnès, one of the exhibitors, the “women’s gaze” exhibition made it possible to communicate, to show other women through the paintings, the situation of internally displaced women and the current situations that threaten.

“I would just like to say thank you to the promoter who thought of the female artist, our milieu is one of the professions that is not as valued,” she said.

The painter, singer, social animator, Makamssa Yago declared that “Regards femme” is a vision of four artists to pay tribute to women who have left their lands due to insecurity.

According to the artist, it is necessary to value the artistic works which carry our vision of the world and to allow the access of art to all.

The curator of the exhibition, Moïse Ouédraogo, indicated that “Regards Femmes” is centered on women, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

The reason why we decided to bring these visual artists together is the choice of the topicality of their terrorism themes which reflect the realities of the moment in Burkina Faso, he added.

As a reminder, the exhibition is held from March 10 to 28, 2023 from 5:30 p.m., in the garden of Le Nomade restaurant located in the Zogona district (Ouagadougou).
