Douala: Septic tank waste causes havoc in Makepe Missoke

Some residents in the Makepe Missoke neighborhood in the Douala 5 subdivision have sent a distress call to municipal authorities alerting them of a mess from the septic tank of an individual that puts their health at risk.

Excrement from poorly connected septic tank pipes flows into their homes. A family said they have been living in the mess for over a year now.

‘The stinking waste from the septic tank drains into my house unceasingly. All the rooms including that of the children stink. The situation has been like this for over a year. We are forced to sleep in the parlor. We are still here because there is no money to go and rent a house elsewhere.’ Akana Cynthia, a housewife said.

They have spent enormously on hospital bills given their children fall sick often.

‘Every month I spend about 50,000frs for my health including that of my wife and children. ‘ David Tiomagnou, the family head revealed.

Efforts to implore the owner to address the problem went in vain.

‘He paid deaf ears and showed no zeal to
repair the septic tank.’ Added David.

The victims of this environmental pollution who have also tabled the problem to the quarterhead with fruitless results now look up to the Douala 5 authorities for intervention and immediate action taken against the owner of the septic tank who is adamant about not repairing it despite a series of complaints.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu mourns Ejisu MP

Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, has expressed sadness over the death of Dr John Kumah, a Deputy Finance Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu.

In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, he said Dr Kumah’s passing was a tragedy of monumental proportions.

‘Just this Tuesday we were together at the economy sub committee of the manifesto committee. I sat right behind you. We spoke and shared ideas, we laughed, and I asked how you were feeling at the end of the day.’

‘The positive assurance was that you were bouncing back strongly. That was reassuring. I could notice, though, that you were struggling a bit,’ he said.

‘That was just less than 48 hours ago. And you have transitioned? If such is life, then life must be very very cruel!’

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said in the lead up to the passage of the Appropriations Bill on December 22, ‘we had to wait on you, learning of the unfortunate circumstances that had taken you to Germany.’

‘We
spoke with you and you assured us that you would be with us on the 20th of December.’

‘It is for this reason that the Appropriation Act was passed on the 22nd of December.’

However, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said subsequently, when he saw Dr Kumah, he realised that he had gone through some pain and turmoil, but God was in charge.

‘Two days ago, you smiled, your usual affectionate smile, an infectious one at that.’

‘When death, which we least expected beckoned; you embraced it….. the warrior that you were.’

‘John, may God give you eternal rest and the good Lord comfort the rest of your family that you have left behind.’

2024 NDC presidential running mate is a perfect choice-Keta MP

Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpe, the Member of Parliament for Keta in the Volta Region, has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, is a perfect choice for upcoming elections.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang would partner with Former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the NDC for this year’s 2024 elections.

Mr Gakpe, in an interview the Ghana News Agency, described Professor Opoku-Agyemang as a competent, dedicated, patriotic, passionate, and a well-fit personality whose partnership with Mr Mahama would lead the party to victory.

‘For Mahama and the elders of the party to retain Prof. Jane for the next general elections tells you that she is capable. We will support them strongly to accomplish the unfinished contest that will probably bring back NDC to power in 2024,’ he stated.

Mr Gakpe further stated that a female running mate for the party simply signified how tolerant and gender balanced the NDC party was to also give women the opportunity
to showcase their abilities in governance.

In a related development, Mr Anthony Dagadu, a political analyst, stated that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang could make a perfect running mate if she adhered to all policies of the party by avoiding frustrations and intimidation from party members.

‘This is not her first time of becoming a running mate. I believe she has gathered more experience that will help her partner Mr Mahama,’ Mr Dagadu said

He expressed the hope that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) would also name an equally good and competent running mate to partner Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for a good race in the 2024 general elections.

However, some NPP supporters GNA interviewed expressed optimism of retaining the presidential seat ‘since the NDC have presented a losing team that once lost to the NPP in the 2020 general elections.’

Professor Opoku-Agyemang was the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

She also served as the Education Minister in 2013-2016 under former President Mahama.
