Colours of a young nation shine in Seychelles National Day Parade

A military parade highlighting the Seychelles National Day celebrated on June 29, the day the island nation got its independence in 1976 from Britain, took place on Friday.

This year’s special guest at the ceremony was the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, and First Lady Jeanette Kagame. President Kagame is on a state visit to Seychelles from June 28 to July 2.

For the second time in a row, the Seychelles’ beautiful capital of Victoria, hosted the prestigious event to mark 47 years since the island nation got its independence.

This year the Seychelles’ National Anthem was played by the National Band and 50 youth accompanied by a 21-gun salute.

Following the arrival of the guest of honour, President Kagame, and the President of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan, the parade started marching from Palm Street.

Once again, the parade, which for many years marched on the tracks of the stadium ‘Stad Linite’, made its way to the centre of Seychelles’ capital Victoria at the Unity Monument, to be greeted by cheering crowds with waving flags.

The customary Military Parade had 23 platoons of the Seychelles Police Force, the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency and youth organisations falling under the Seychelles National Youth Council. The parade also included platoons from foreign military forces, namely the United Kingdom, the Indian Navy, and the Reunion-based Armed Forces in the Southern Indian Ocean (FAZSOI).

The platoons marched along Constitution Avenue passing in front of the ‘Lavwa Lanasyon’ [Voice of the Nation] monument and proceeded towards Liberty Monument. After saluting the President, the platoons marched up to the International Conference Centre (ICCS) car park.

As part of the celebration, there a performance of well-known veteran Seychellois artist John Wirtz with his ever-popular song ‘Desann pou Lendepandans’ [Come down for the Independence].

In addition, this year, there were floats from 25 districts showing off aspects of their rich history and culture in a display of colours and vibrancy.

The ceremony ended with a performance of the Moutya, a Seychelles traditional dance added to UNESCO’s list of intangible heritage in December 2021.

Happy Seychelles National Day: Celebrating 47 years of independence

Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan wishes a Happy National Day to all Seychellois citizens as the island nation celebrates 47 years of its independence on Thursday, June 29.

Ramkalawan said in his message that “47 years in the life of a country earns us the classification of a young nation. We are still taking note of all that surrounds us, we are planning, aspiring and formulating the ideas that we hope will make us stand strong and truly breathe that pride as one people.”

He said that as a young nation, “we will make mistakes, but that’s not what counts. What is important is that when we fall, we find the courage to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and renew that determination to move forward. This is the Seychellois Creole spirit flowing in the veins of every Seychellois and that we also want to share with everyone we meet.”

In his message, Ramkalawan said that the government is working really hard to establish the appropriate infrastructure in the country and announced the building of a new modern hospital at Mont Fleuri and that details would be provided later.

“We estimate that such a project can cost at least SCR 1 billion rupees ($74.5 million). I am launching an appeal, like when the first Victoria/Seychelles Hospital was built, for all of us to make a contribution. I invite all schools, workplaces, and all Seychellois to put boxes where people will be able to contribute, cent by cent. An account will be opened for this project and all the details will be furnished. If all goes well, we will be able to start this construction in 2024,” he said.

Two other large projects that the government is already working on are a new airport and a new port and plans are already being made and appropriate funding is being sought.

“Seychellois sisters and brothers, today let us continue to celebrate our achievements. Let us, each one of us, find out what more we can do for our beautiful Seychelles,” said Ramkalawan.

Patrick Hermine, the president of the main opposition party – United Seychelles – also wished the people of Seychelles a blessed and wonderful Independence Day.

In his message, Herminie said, “If today we are proud as a Nation, we must give credit to those brave and bold enough to fight for Independence.”

“As we celebrate our 47th anniversary and joyously sing our patriotic songs, no matter our ideology or beliefs, let us remember and reflect on how this multi-cultural nation has moved from bondage of slavery from the start of its existence to liberty and freedom of choice today,” he added.

Herminie said that Seychellois citizens should never be complacent and should ensure that “we continue to maintain our independence from any outside influence and that we forge ahead with the success of all our people in mind “lest we forget” the lessons of the past.”

Happy National Day wishes also came from the secretary general of the ruling Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) party, Gervais Henrie.

“With a new government leading Seychelles since October 2020, we have been given a new opportunity to restart – to avoid past mistakes and build on the good elements in us as a Creole nation,” he said in his message.

Henrie added that “even when it is not easy to accomplish all, LDS remains determined to lead Seychelles on a new road where we become a working nation. One that obeys the law, proud of its culture and identity, and believes in the principles of democracy.”

A former President of Seychelles, James Michel, also wished all Seychellois a Happy National Day.

“Seychelles has grown and matured into a proud nation, standing tall alongside other successful countries. In such a short time, we have managed to make significant progress on all fronts. Our country and accomplishments are highly regarded and valued across the globe. It is reason enough to be proud indeed,” said Michel.

“As we celebrate this Independence Day anniversary, let us remember the many people who fought hard for our political and economic freedom. Our celebration of nationhood should also be a time for serious reflection on the people we have become and our aspirations for our children and generations to come,” he added.

Martha Inspires Foundation, TESCON engage students on harnessing opportunities

A day’s youth seminar to engage students on how to develop capacity and strategise on measures to help maximise their potential in career development has been held in Tamale.

It was organised by the Tamale Technical University Chapter of Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), the students’ wing of the New Patriotic Party, in partnership with Martha Inspires Foundation, an NGO working to empower youth growth and development.

It was on the theme: ‘Overcoming My Fears to magnify My Potential’.

Mr Abdul-Mumin Alhassan, Tamale Technical University Chapter President of TESCON, speaking during the event, said it was to help equip students on how to harness business and other employment opportunities in the corporate space devoid of fear and intimidation.

He said most tertiary students completed their education without any clear direction or clue of their potential, a situation which made it difficult for them to access any meaningful employment and other opportunities.

Ms Martha Anabila, Chief Executive Officer of Martha Inspires Foundation took participants through steps to identifying one’s potential and how to maximise it for communal and national development.

She tasked the students to set realistic and achievable goals and endeavour to aspire for success and greatness.

She said: ‘The onus lies on you to be determined, focused on your pursuit for success, keep your eyes fixed on the goals you set for yourself.’

Mr Mohammed Kamil Abubakar, Lecturer at the Department of Engineering, Tamale Technical University, advised the students not to allow any circumstances to limit their dreams and prospects.

Prince Mba calls for the establishment of Civil Defence Corps

There is the need to establish Civil Defence Corps to protect Vital National Assets, Mr Prince Bagnaba Mba, President of Forum for Equity, a Non-Governmental Human right Organisation has stated.

He mentioned the protection of assets like gas pipelines and petroleum installations, the railway lines, especially the new line to northern end of the country.

Apart from that Mr Mba said they could also compliment the work of the Ghana immigration service at the borders of the country through patrol and surveillance duties to ensure safety of life and minimise losses

He suggested that the Corps should be at post at every district to ensure minimum losses during emergencies and natural disasters.

‘There’s a yearning gap in our security network that needs to be filled with the corps’.

He said the terrorist threats on the Northern borders would be held in check by the corps if established at every district.

The corps he said could also protect major infrastructure throughout the country as a proactive approach to protect and prevent any eventuality.

‘It is necessary and urgent for stakeholders to act immediately and swiftly, he added.

Attainment of SDGs requires women participation as role models – SWIDA-GH

Hajia Alima Sagito Saeed, the Executive Director of the Savannah Women Integrated Development Agency (SWIDA-GH), has called for the active involvement of women as role models, to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She referred to the Goals five and 10, which targeted gender equality, saying said it was important for women, who survived various degrees of gender inequalities, to act as role models in their communities to serve as inspiration to other young women, who aspired for greatness.

Hajia Saeed made the call at this year’s annual summit of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), which was organised by the University for Development Studies’ (UDS) Local Chapter and supported by SWIDA-GH, Songtaba, and Regional Advisory Information and Network Systems (RAINS), all non-governmental organisations. .

She said, it was unfortunate that most young women, who had escaped various forms of abuses, did not want to advocate the rights of others.

‘If you are privileged to have escaped child marriage, when you get back to your community, act as a role model to justify why young women should be given the opportunity to access education,’ Hajia Saeed emphasised.

Hajia Iddrisu Mariam Bugala, the Chief Executive Officer of Girls to Women Foundation, said the low representation of women in various leadership positions required that women rose to the occasion by being advocates against issues that impeded their inclusion in major decision-making processes in the country.
