First batch of UHAS Basic students complete BECE

The first batch of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Basic School, who were part of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), have successfully completed the examination ending Friday with a French paper.

The Gallant Seven of five girls and two boys became the pioneering pacesetters for UHAS Basic School to complete an external examination.

Ms Adjoa Nyamekye Afriyie Forkuo, a candidate and the outgone Girl’s Prefect told the Ghana News Agency her fears, which translated into nervousness before the first paper but that vanished when the exam papers were shared and the invigilators commands for start work.

‘BECE is just a normal exam after those initial scary moments,’ she said that the mock exams which were prelude to the BECE were more difficult than what we encountered at UHAS Basic.

Ms Forkuo is optimistic of making aggregate Six, all things being equal.

Ms Etornam Priscilla, Hillary Antor, another pioneering candidate expected to make aggregate Seven from the preparations offered them by the school authorities.

They paid glowing tributes to their parents and teachers for collective efforts, which they believed would bear positive fruits in shaping their academic journey.

Mr Seth Korgah, Head of UHAS Basic described the academic journey for the pioneering class as torturous but with tenacity of purpose and Grace of God, the first BECE hurdle has been cleared.

He expects a 100 per cent score due to the preparations by teachers, extra classes, online and weekend classes.

‘BECE seem far from us but today, we have conquered that successfully,’ graced by no prevailing health issues nor exam malpractice.

Mr Korgah thanked parents and other stakeholders for their support and asked for continuous prayers for the examiners, who would mark the papers, as ‘we jubilate.’

UHAS Basic was established in 2021 for students of the University community but extended to the public.

Akuapim South NCCE, EC organise school prefectorial elections

The Akuapim South Municipal National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Electoral Commission (EC) have organised elections for schools to elect their prefects to inculcate democratic values in young people.

The collaboration between the NCCE and EC is part of a broader effort to promote civic education and civic engagement among the youth in the Akuapim South Municipal Area.

These elections aim to provide students with practical experience in the democratic process and encourage young Ghanaians to take an active role in decision-making within their schools.

Mr. Alex Owusu Akyaw, Akuapim South Municipal NCCE Director, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that it was important to practicalize the election process for students at their basic level, saying that it would contribute to minimising future rejected and spoiled ballots and eliminating electoral offences.

‘I advise you students to take the exercise very seriously and as a national assignment on your quest to become future leaders of this nation,’ he said, adding that ‘catching them young… will promote the virtues of good citizenship.’

Mrs. Patience Abekwei, EC, Deputy Akuapem South Municipal Electoral Officer, oversaw the prefectorial elections and educated students on electoral rules and regulations, such as entering a procession and waiting one’s turn.

She stated that voters were required to give their names so that election officials could verify or establish their identities using the voter registration list.

Voters are also required to have their fingertips marked with an indelible marker to indicate they have been approved to vote only once, after which they can cast secret ballots in voting booths.

Mr. William Nana Osei, Principal Field Officer at NCCE in the municipality, administered the oath of office to the elected school prefects, including sports and compound prefects.

Miss Liqueenda Yaa Addo and Master Vincent Kuffour were the respective Girls’ and Boys’ prefects for Aburi Presbyterian Junior High School ‘B’

Miss Perpetual Odei and Nana Amoako were the Girls’ and Boys’ prefects, respectively, at Aburi PWCE Demonstration JHS.

Through these elections, the EC and NCCE hope to instill a sense of responsibility and accountability in the next generation of leaders, and by giving students the opportunity to participate in the democratic process, they are fostering a culture of active citizenship and civic participation from a young age.

The overall aim of the initiative is to encourage young people to contribute to the development of Ghana through non-violent means.

We are going to enjoy free Senior High School policy – JHS graduates

Some Junior High School graduates in the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination said they were happy the free Senior High School policy was still being implemented.

Some of the graduates, speaking to the Ghana News Agency after the last paper, French Language, noted that they could not wait to enter the second cycle to enjoy the policy.

They hoped that successive governments would continue the policy as they described it as a good policy to lessen burden, especially on parents, who could not afford to pay their wards school fees.

They expressed their profound gratitude to the Almighty God for his mercy and grace, which they said had made it possible for them to come to a successful end.

Makafui Gifty Kra, one of the graduands was grateful to her parents and teachers for their love and care, adding that she could not wait to enter Senior High to continue her education.

Meanwhile, it was all joy at the various centres of the Examination visited by the Ghana News Agency within the Ho township.

The graduates were full of joy with some throwing the paper into the air as they made a joyful noise unto their Maker for seeing them through.

‘We shall overcome’ a popular victory song, sung to encourage oneself while going through tough times or situations filled the atmosphere as the graduates ran here and there embracing and congratulating each other.

‘Goodbye BECE, we are done with you’ could be heard among some of them as they jumped and danced with some of the boys removing their top shirts and throwing them into the air.
