President highlights Angola/China relations of friendship and solidarity

Angolan president João Lourenço reiterated Sunday in Luanda, his country’s commitment to continue cultivating solid relations of friendship and solidarity with China towards the achievement of the common desires of the people for peace, harmony and shared development.

The commitment is expressed in a congratulatory message to the Chinese people and government on the 74th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, ANGOP has learnt.

In the message, the Angolan statesman highlights China’s trajectory in recent decades, which has led it to consolidate its position as an unavoidable protagonist in the international community, committed to building a world security architecture based on the promotion of common progress and economic development at a global level.

Angola/China cooperation

Angola and China are strategic partners, with political-diplomatic and cooperation relations that have grown significantly since 2000, leading to the signing of various legal instruments in the social, commercial and business fields.

According to data, trade between the two countries reached 27.3 billion US dollars in 2022.

Since the start of Angola’s reconstruction and construction of development infrastructures in 2002, trade balance between the two states stood at 150 million US dollars.

China is Angola’s biggest trading partner and remains in the top of the list of the Southern African nation’s largest customers for goods exports, especially oil

Vice-President to re-inaugurate burn hospital

The Vice-President of Angola Esperança da Costa is due to re-inaugurate Monday, the Neves Bendinha Burn Hospital located in Luanda, after being given a facelift that enabled the expansion of the premises.

With the expansion, the hospital will have 93 new beds to accommodate patients, three laboratories, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and telemedicine.

According to a note that reached ANGOP, burn patients, who had been treated and those admitted to a municipal hospital will begin to be transferred to Neves Bendinha burn hospital from October 3.

The facelift enabled the Block 1 to be equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory, sterilization, a drug store with specific drugs for burns and others in common use and an 81-seat auditorium and administrative areas.

The Block 2 has been equipped with a library and meeting room with video conference, while Block 3 provides maintenance and supportive services.

The ICU has been equipped with 13 beds, three isolation beds for infectious diseases. The laboratory service has three rooms, two for clinical analysis (internal and external) and one for microbiology.

President João Lourenço had instructed the repair and expansion of the burn hospital based on the allocation of financial resources from the oil bonus for this purpose, this occurred after he leant about the advanced state of decay the hospital was found during a visit he paid in 2018.

President Akufo-Addo optimistic about Ghana’s health goals for 2030

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the country’s vision of becoming the preferred destination for medical care in West Africa by 2030 is on course.

He said the country was working successfully towards that goal with a substantial investment to strengthen health systems performance, infrastructural growth and access to quality healthcare.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, inaugurating the St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital (SMSH), at Lapaz, Accra, said the nation’s health target had been buoyed by the progress of work on the ‘Agenda 111’ initiative.

The initiative is to provide 100-bed standard district hospitals with accommodation for doctors and nurses, construction of new regional hospitals for the six newly-created regions as well as two new psychiatric hospitals.

Giving a breakdown of the percentage of work done so far, the President hinted that the average completion rate of the 89 ongoing projects was 52 per cent, with work on some of the sites being 70 to 80 per cent complete.

These comprise 86 district hospitals, two regional psychiatric hospitals and the Western Regional Hospital.

The President lauded the founder of the Specialist Hospital, Mr. Michael Banahene, for his vision and complementing the Government’s efforts at achieving universal health coverage.

The Hospital is a multidisciplinary state-of-the-art facility providing patient-centred healthcare services, including surgery.

It deals with plastic and neurosurgery, cardiology and mental health consultations, surgical care, paediatrics, dental and interventional cardiology care, antenatal and delivery care, amongst others.

‘Beyond the building of these new healthcare facilities, my vision is to help our country become the Centre of Excellence in medical care in West Africa by 2030,’ the President assured.

The relevance of the country’s vision, he said, was reinforced by the fact that the sub-Region was projected to have a population of half a billion people by the said year.

Consequently, the authorities were leveraging Ghana’s status as the most peaceful country in the Region to upgrade its health facilities and human resource development, he stressed.

The agenda is to derive maximum benefits from the health sector for accelerated economic growth.

‘The first wealth is health. Good health is fundamental to all we do and hope to do,’ President Nana Akufo-Addo noted.

He reiterated the Government’s commitment to working with the private sector in achieving the nation’s health goals, especially as enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor , described the SMSH project as monumental, and commended the authorities for the initiative.

Mr. Banahene, the Founder, said achieving universal health coverage was a shared responsibility, and urged the Government to work effectively with the private sector to achieve that goal.

GBF keen on leading Black Bombers to secure 2024 Olympic Games qualification

Mr. Dauda Fuseini, Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) says the Federation is committed to help select well-experienced boxers to represent Ghana in the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers in Italy.

Ghana failed to book a slot in the first qualification process in Dakar, Senegal as all 12 boxers were eliminated.

However, Ghana stands a chance of making it to the competition in the next qualifiers in Italy with hopes of making history once again.

Mr. Fuseini speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports said ‘The boys are so poised in attaining something in the next qualification tournament which would happen in Italy. We have been able to psych them, so we have called them again for a new session in preparation for the qualifiers’.

He noted that there was an assurance Ghana would qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic following the zeal shown in their few days of training.

He said in order to get the best boxers for Ghana, the Federation was set to organize a boxing justify to select boxers who would represent Ghana, of which Olympic Champion Samuel Takyi was included.

‘We are going to change the dynamics because we have realised that a lot of countries are getting their professional boxers involved and we also have few professional boxers who are exceptionally good who would be included in the justification process.’

The Vice President urged Ghanaians to rally behind the team as they go all out to achieve success.

In all, 13 boxers have begun training with the Black Bombers team ahead of the qualifiers.

The 2024 Olympic Games is slated for July 24.

Premier League Champions, Medeama Sporting Club have left the shores of Ghana for their CAF Champions League second-leg clash encounter against Guinea’s AC Horoya.

CAF Confederation Cup: Dreams FC heads to Liberia ahead of second leg clash against FC Kallon

Ghana Premier League side, Dreams FC have left the shores of Ghana to Monrovia to prepare for their second leg encounter of the CAF Confederation Cup against FC Kallon at the SKD Stadium on Saturday.

Dreams FC managed to pick a 2-1 advantage against their opponents in the first leg and would need a convincing win to sail through to the next stage of the continental competition.

Coach Abdul Karim Zito has settled on his final 18-man squad who would be in action to secure a positive result for the side.

The gaffer also expressed confidence in his men going into the clash despite playing as visitors against a strong Liberian side.

The FA Cup champions would be in search of a second advantage, having eliminated Guinea’s Milo FC in the first round.
