Stakeholders To Harmonise African Education Standards

Education stakeholders in Africa are working on modalities to harmonise the continent’s education standards with emerging challenges in the labour market.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Mr. Ezekiel Machogu, said the pivotal role of Africa in the evolution of labour markets and education systems calls for responsive policies that promote lifelong learning and empower individuals to acquire the skills and qualifications needed for success.

‘This will enable Africa to contribute to a more inclusive future where the workforce is agile, resilient, and ready to face the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow,’ said Machogu.

He commended the commitment of various governments to develop responsive and effective frameworks that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and support the skills revolution, social inclusion, and enhanced employability for all segments of the population.

The CS made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Technical and Vocational Training (TVET), Dr. Esther Muoria, during the African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF) II Training Workshop held at a Nairobi hotel.

The theme of the three-day training workshop is ‘Making National Qualifications Frameworks Operational in a Changing World’.

The Principal Secretary State Department for Technical and Vocational Training (TVET), Dr. Esther Muoria during the African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF) -II Training Workshop held at a Nairobi hotel.

Machogu said he is impressed with the commencement of the groundbreaking training programme that highlights the importance of the current educational landscape, especially in light of the ongoing global changes in qualification frameworks.

‘A nation that invests in policies aimed at enhancing the credibility and alignment of qualifications with emerging global trends is a forward-thinking nation,’ he emphasised.

The CS noted that the transformative nature of qualifications, which have been significantly influenced by global megatrends such as digitalization, automation, demographic shifts, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic, has reshaped the relationship between education systems and the labour market.

He further stressed the importance of adapting to the rapid pace of technological advancement since reskilling and upskilling require a flexible approach that enables the acquisition of credentials for lifelong learning.

Machogu emphasised the need to bridge the gap between education and work, underpinned by high-quality and trusted qualifications recognised at all levels.

The Acting Director General of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority, Dr. Alice Kande, highlighted the complexity of the modern world, emphasising the need for continuous adaptation to technological advancements and economic shifts.

Dr. Kande stressed the pivotal role qualification frameworks play in shaping the quality and relevance of education in respective nations.

The KNQF, she noted, stands as a beacon of educational enlightenment in Kenya, offering structured pathways for learners, professionals, and institutions to keep pace with change.

She said KNQF represents a structured journey of personal and professional development, with levels not mere labels but operational rungs guiding individuals towards their goals.

Dr. Kande urged African nations to develop their own National Qualifications Frameworks (NQFs) that underscore their role in advancing education, fostering regional collaboration, and enhancing global competitiveness.

Drawing from the experiences of countries like Kenya and South Africa, she emphasised the need for meaningful dialogue, best practice exchange, and addressing challenges in the pursuit of transparent qualifications and mutual trust for lifelong learning in Africa.

The evolving nature of NQFs was not overlooked, with Dr. Kande highlighting their increasing engagement with digitalization.

She stressed that learning in all contexts matters more than ever, especially as the world undergoes transformations in work, technology, and the economy, noting that effective NQFs are key to achieving SDG-4 in areas of inclusive and equitable quality education and SDG-8 on decent work and economic growth while contributing to the wider objectives of skills revolution, social inclusion, and improved employability.

The ACQF-II Training Workshop is set to be a crucible for forging a path towards a more harmonised, transparent, and effective education system across Africa, whose efforts are poised to resonate for years to come

Kiambu Targets 22,000 Children In Polio Vaccination Drive

The second round of the 5-day polio immunisation campaign that is ongoing in Kiambu County started on Saturday, October 7th, and will run until Wednesday, October 11th, this year, with organisers targeting to reach at least 3.1 million children under five years countrywide.

Kiambu is among ten counties that are at high risk of polio. Other counties are Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kitui, Tana River, Garissa, Lamu, Wajir, and Mandera.

Kiambu is also among the counties where the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with county governments and partners, successfully undertook round one of the polio campaign in August this year, which targeted three other counties: Kajiado, Garissa, and Nairobi.

During the round one (1) campaign, a total of 1,960,748 children under five years were vaccinated out of a target of 1,879,402 children, translating to 104.2 per cent coverage.

Speaking to KNA today during the ongoing campaign, Kiambu Sub-County Medical Officer of Health Dr. June Nyakianda said the first campaign saw Kiambu achieve 95 per cent coverage after immunising 21,934 under-5-year-olds and covering 41,212 households, which is 131 per cent against the targeted 32,301 households.

‘Our target for the second round of campaigns is to reach 22,191 children under the age of five,’ she said, noting that they have teams in every ward who are going around the county.

Nyakianda said the exercise is being carried out in schools, daycare centres, homes, and public areas, and children will see their fingers marked with indelible ink, and homes where vaccination has taken place will also be marked with coloured chalk.

She, however, acknowledged that the biggest challenge they are experiencing is the communities’ reluctance to vaccinate.

‘We want to reiterate that this vaccine is safe and urge parents to ensure that their children receive the required vaccine dose,’ she added.

In June, the government reported six cases of polio, which prompted the state to conduct an emergency polio vaccination in four counties.

The ongoing polio outbreaks are squarely attributed to missed vaccination opportunities among children. This is the second and third planned vaccination rounds following the polio outbreak.

In this second campaign, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the transmission of the virus is still active in Garissa County, especially within the refugee camps, and the surveillance system had detected an additional two polio cases, bringing the total number to eight.

According to the 2019 Population Census, Kiambu County has a population of 2,417,735 with a total population of 87,594 children falling within the age group of 3 to 5 years.

CITAM Seeks Permission From Members To Utilise Their Data

Nakuru-based Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM) church has called on its members to consent to its use of media images recorded during services, as the church joined in the conversation about data protection quest.

Senior Pastor Rev. Serah Kamau urged members to allow the church to utilise images and videos recorded for the sole purpose of promoting CITAM’s mission of local and international outreach.

‘We are living in times where emphasis is on data protection, and we want you to know that we will not use your media recordings for any other purpose other than the furtherance of the Kingdom of God.

‘We are also encouraging parents to give us (consent through) signed forms to allow us to use any images of their children being involved in our programmes, to help us utilise them for mobilisation and on TV, websites, and online pages,’ noting that the same consent had been requested from parents of children attending CITAM schools.

Rev. Kamau committed not to use the images of children for any commercial interest, noting that the consent will help guide the church whenever the children are involved in public events, activities, and programmes.

‘These images could be used in print and digital media formats, including print publications, websites, e-marketing, posters, banners, advertising, social media teachings, and research purposes. Should you have any concerns, kindly notify us,’ the church announced.

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), last month imposed a fine of Sh4.55 million on a school for posting images of minors without parental consent, which was against the law.

In a statement to newsrooms, the ODPC cautioned entities against violating the law and urged them to put in place data protection policies and safeguards. Commissioner Immaculate Kassait called upon data controllers and data processors to ensure personal data processed was in line with the Data Protection Act, failure to which, they risked a fine of up to Sh5 million.
