Accra: The Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), a media advocacy and anti-corruption Non-Governmental Organisation, has lauded the Ghana Office of the United Nations (UN) for its exemplary leadership, as the world commemorates the 79th UN Day. The foundation gave the commendation in a statement issued in and signed by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu.

According to Ghana News Agency, a copy of the statement made available to them said, “the UN Day celebrated on October 29, 2024, was held at the Accra International Conference Centre and brought together government officials, civil society organizations, and citizens to reflect on the UN’s enduring commitment to peace, development, and human rights.” On the occasion of the commemoration of the 79th UN Day, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Charles Abani held a reception Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in Accra, and the guest was Mr Ahenu.

The celebration was on the theme: ‘building a sustainable future for all’ and resonated deeply with
the global challenges and aspirations outlined in the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It said the UN Ghana Office organized a series of activities, including panel discussions, cultural performances, and exhibitions, highlighting the country’s progress and ongoing efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The statement quoted Mr Abani, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and international cooperation in addressing global issues such as climate change, poverty, and inequality. He commended the government and the good people of Ghana for their unwavering commitment to the UN’s ideals and for being a beacon of peace and stability in the region.

The statement also quoted Mr Ahenu praising the UN Ghana Office for its inclusive and engaging approach to the Election 2024. “The UN Day commemoration in Ghana is a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared vision of a better world. We commend the UN Ghana Office for its leadership and commitment to fostering di
alogue and action towards sustainable development,” the statement indicated.

It further acknowledged the role of civil society and youth organizations in the celebration, noting their critical contributions to driving change and innovation. The participation of young people in the discussions underscored the importance of empowering the next generation to take an active role in shaping their future.

As the world marks 79 years since the founding of the United Nations, the celebrations in Ghana served as a reminder of the enduring relevance of the UN’s mission and the collective responsibility to uphold its principles. The statement expressed the hope that the spirit of unity and cooperation demonstrated during the celebration would inspire continued progress towards a more equitable and sustainable world.
