Nairobi: Kenya is set to co-host the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in August 2025 alongside Uganda and Tanzania. This will be the eighth edition of the biennial competition organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the first time it will be jointly co-hosted by three countries.
According to Kenya News Agency, speaking during the CHAN National Steering Committee at Talanta Plaza, Nairobi, Principal Secretary (PS) for State Department for Sports Elijah Mwangi announced that the country has been given the green light by CAF and is prepared to host the tournament. He assured that the committee had an oversight CHAN meeting to assess their readiness and reported that everything is set. CAF has already scheduled the matches.
The PS, who chairs the committee, stated that the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani stadium was handed over to the Local Organising Committee and other facilities are also prepared for the event. He confirmed that the stadiums and training grounds meet CAF standards, a significant undertaking for the nation.
Principal Secretary for State Department for Defense Patrick Mariru supported the statement, emphasizing that all infrastructure and stadiums required for the tournament are ready. He confirmed the completion of renovations and upgrades at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani stadium, and Nyayo National Stadium, along with Ulinzi Sports complex and Police Sacco stadium.
On security matters, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Interior Raymond Omollo assured the security of Kenyans and visitors. He detailed the necessary deployments and training reviews for police officers, ensuring protection for participants, spectators, and businesses involved in the tournament. Omollo urged public cooperation with security agencies to ease traffic flow and maintain order during the event.
Omollo highlighted that successfully hosting the CHAN Championship would enhance Kenya's international reputation, showcasing its capability to organize major events and potentially attracting future investments. The event is seen as a significant opportunity for Kenya to display its sporting infrastructure, promoting local talent and the nation's offerings on a global stage.
The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship, focusing on home-based players, will run from 2-30 August 2025, providing a platform for local talent to gain exposure and experience, contributing to the development of football in the country.
