CNA Sports: Cameroon Cup 2023; early exit for YOSA, PWD humbles Dream Olympique, Gazelle crowned Futsal champions

The two darling clubs of the North West were in action Thursday, May 25, for their matches counting for the 32nd finals of the Cup of Cameroon.

PWD Social Club of Bamenda whitewashed Dream Olympique, an amateur club from the East Region, 7-1 at the Yaoundé Omnisports Annex Stadium thanks to a brace from Heka and goals from Blaise, Dieudonné, Tangko, Awahmukala, Bello Karim. The Abakwa boys will in the 16th finals face the winner of the match between Fauve Azur and Épervier of Ebolowa.

Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda on their part could not resist the current holders of the Cameroon Cup, Coton Sports of Garoua as the Boys of Blaise Ndikum bowed 0-4 at the Bertoua stadium.

This result summarizes the team’s difficult season this year.

Another Club from the North West Region that was scheduled this Thursday was Rangers of Bafut whose match against Union of Douala could not take place. Closed sources say the Director of the Bandjoun Stadium where the match was programmed, did not give them access to the stadium for unknown reasons.

Other matches will be played this Friday, May 26th with the Vice Champions of Cameroon, Bamboutos FC of Mbouda to face Africa FA at Limbe the Limbe Centenary Stadium.

Foncha Street of Bamenda will face Atlantic of Kribi at the CAF excellence centre.

32nd final matches of the 2023 Cameroon Cup scheduled to be played at the Mbouda Arena Stadium might be relocated.

The Mbouda Arena Stadium has temporarily been suspended for a 30-day period by the National Sports Facilities and Equipment Board.

The suspension note is contained in correspondence from the Board’s Administrator, François Félix Ewane to FECAFOOT President, Samuel Eto’o on Wednesday, May 24.

The main reason for the suspension as mentioned in the letter is the degrading nature of the pitch due to its high utilization rate, thus needing particular attention.

During this period, the pitch will be upgraded to normal standards.

Futsal 2023:

Gazelle FA of Garoua has won both the 2023 Futsal League and the Cameroon Cup.

Frustrated and pained, UFC boss, Dana White, says Nganou’s PFL deal, senseless

Petit, spiteful little man Dana White has not yet gotten over Francis Nganou’s transition from UFC to PFL.

In an interview, Dana White said the Cameroonian was “afraid” to take risks, reasons why he fought only three fights in three years.

Dana continued, that the deal with PFL is senseless and will not yield any fruits.

“I know how the story ends…he is not even fighting their champions right now. He wants the box and from what I am hearing he is not going to fight for another year…based on what I know about the deal which is not much. It makes no sense when you pay a guy not to fight for a whole year. The day that we released him, I knew exactly what was going to happen”

He laughed over a close to 300 million deal between the PFL and some businessmen from the middle east, “Who is gonna give them 280 to 300 thousand dollars from the middle east,” he questioned.

The former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Nganou in a series of tweets, asked Dana White to leave him alone because he completed his contract and was never released as claimed.

Nganou whose new contract with PFL will see him as the PFL African Chairman, said he is happy that he is finally being recognised and respected and that is all that matters.

On May 19, Mr Nganou tweeted that Dana White should contact PFL if he wants his fighter, Jon Jones to face the former UFC heavyweight champion.

Ruthless Medeama hit Hearts for five to go top of the league Ruthless Medeama hit Hearts for five to go top of the league

Medeama SC delivered an impressive away performance as they thumped Hearts of Oak 5-1 in a matchday 31 encounter played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

A brace from Jonathan Sowah and a goal each from Derrick Fordjour, Akwasi Donsu, and Vincent Atinga ensured maximum points for Medeama, who leapfrogged Aduana Stars into first position on the league log with 53 points.

Salifu Ibrahim’s goal from the penalty spot could only serve as a consolation.

It was the first home defeat suffered by David Ocloo since he was appointed interim Hearts coach, as the Phobians stayed fifth on the league table with 45 points.

Hearts were very lacklustre at the start of the game, unable to string passes together with Medeama controlling affairs.

Medeama were absolutely brilliant on the ball, playing some expansive football from defence to midfield into the attack.

The ‘Mauve and Yellow’ deservedly took the lead in the 17th minute after Derrick Fordjour struck from outside the penalty box with some shocking goalkeeping from Richmond Ayi as the ball mysteriously went past him into the next.

The Hearts of Oak players were awakened by Medeama’s goal as they began to slowly get back in the game.

Referee Yao Bless awarded Hearts a penalty with half an hour gone after Caleb Amankwah was brought down in the penalty box.

Ibrahim stepped up from 12 yards and restored parity for the Phobians in the 32nd minute to cap off an exciting game.

Hearts, however, relinquished their lead two minutes later after Amankwah brought down Fordjour in the penalty box and Yao Bless whistled for a penalty.

Atinga made no mistake from 12 yards as he put Medeama back in the lead with a cool finish.

Matters got worse for the Phobians on the brink of halftime as Jonathan Sowah scored the third goal for Medeama SC.

The second half got much more intense, with Hearts on the front foot as they looked to get back in the game.

The three second-half substitutions made by Hearts coach David Ocloo made an impact on the game, as Hearts dominated affairs but lacked the cutting edge in front of goal.

Caleb Amankwah did put the ball in the back of the net for Hearts, but the goal was disallowed for offside with an hour played.

Hearts were creating all the chances in the second half and could have pulled one goal back through Albert Diedonne, but Medeama goalkeeper Felix Kyei was excellent in the post.

Medeama were brilliant in defence, with former Hearts player Vicent Atinga making some crucial blocks.

Two late goals from Sowah and Donsu capped off an emphatic win for Medeama, who are now in pole position to win the league.

Ghana thrash Benin 3-0 in WAFU B opener?

The Black Princesses of Ghana began their West Africa Football Union (WAFU) B Girls Cup campaign with a 3-0 victory over Benin at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Maafia Nyame, Mary Amponsah and Skipper Stella Nyamekye gave the hosts a perfect start in the competition as they journey to win the sub-regional title.

The Princesses coming into the clash were confident of grabbing all three points, having had a pre-tournament preparation against Group B counterparts, the Menas of Niger last Wednesday.

Coach Basigi’s side was solid in their play as they enjoyed most possession in the early minutes of the game, comfortably sharing passes like it was nobody’s business.

Skipper Nyamekye was brilliant on the day, keeping the attack of the Ghanaian side busy whiles Maafia Nyame also kept hopes alive with her breathtaking skilful play and impressive runs.

Benin tried to pave the way into Ghana’s defence but was unsuccessful after several attempts.

Despite the dominance, it was still difficult for Yussif Basigi and his charges to find the net as they bottled some crucial chances in the visitors’ half.

It took the intervention of Faith Ladies attacker, Maafia Nyame to break the deadlock after she beautifully slotted in a perfect cross from Comfort Yeboah in the 35th minute to put the Princesses ahead of their opponents to end the first 45 minutes 1-0.

The second half was indeed a recovery session for Ghana who came all out to mount pressure on Benin.

Substitute, Mary Amponsah after a successful season with Ampem Darkoa, continued her goalscoring streak to once again register her name on the scoresheet 16 minutes into the second half with a brilliant shot.

Benin was more defensive as they packed themselves in the 18-yard box to escape humiliation.

Stella Nyamekye sealed the win for the Princesses with a well-calculated freekick 68 minutes on the clock to give her side a comfortable lead.

After several attempts, both teams could not make good use of some goalscoring chances as Ghana recorded their first victory in the WAFU B Girls Cup.

Stella Nyamekye was named the player of the match.

Ghana would face Ivory Coast in their next fixture.
