The Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa, CHRDA, has condemned the killing of unarmed civilians by separatists in Muea, Buea Southwest region.
In a release signed by the body on September 8, 2023, they noted that the attack was carried out by separatists to cripple the new school year.
“This attack was perpetrated by separatist fighters a bit to reinforce the two-week lockdown imposed by Separatists to stifle school resumption of the 2023/2024 Academic Year in the two English-speaking North-West and South-West Region of Cameroon,”
On Thursday, September 7, 2023, Two persons were burned alive in their taxis while another was shot dead in Muea, Buea.
CHRDA reiterated that education is a fundamental human right and must be respected as stated in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“Everyone has the right to education, education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all based on merit.”
They called on all parties involved in the conflict to stop the attack on education and on unarmed civilians.
