Mouhoun: The Dedougou health district received a significant boost to its logistical capabilities with the delivery of a brand new 4x4 vehicle. This donation, provided by the Belgian International Cooperation Agency (Enabel) as part of the Lasso Sante project, aims to enhance the supervision, monitoring, and response capacities of health services amid existing challenges.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Dedougou health district has been grappling with issues such as deteriorating communication routes and an aging vehicle fleet. The introduction of this new vehicle is expected to provide much-needed relief to health personnel and the local population. Dr. Nathalie Ouadeba, the District Chief Medical Officer, expressed satisfaction with the donation, noting that the district's previous vehicle fleet was in poor condition, leading to postponed activities and breakdowns during transit.
Dr. Ouadeba emphasized that the strengthened vehicle fleet will improve supervision in health centers. Additionally, the support package includes data collection equipment for Community Based Health Workers, enhancing their field effectiveness.
The High Commissioner of Mouhoun Province, Souleymane Nakanabo, appreciated the gesture, valued at over 31 million CFA francs. He acknowledged that this assistance alleviates some of the district's pressing needs and expressed gratitude to Enabel, hoping for continued support in other community health sectors.
Dr. Yambre, head of the Lasso Sante project, explained that this initiative is part of a larger program launched in January 2024 with a four-year timeline. Funded by Belgian cooperation, Lasso Sante aims to strengthen health systems in Mouhoun and Bale provinces, having already delivered positive outcomes. The project has facilitated the delivery of an ambulance and medical equipment to the Boromo health district, provision of IT resources, staff training, and community awareness initiatives.
In the medium term, Lasso Sante plans to undertake structural projects such as rehabilitating the maternity ward at Boromo health district hospital, extending the Dedougou district distribution depot, and renovating the Boromo operating theatre. These investments target improved access to and quality of care, particularly benefiting vulnerable populations like women and children.
Ultimately, the project's success will be gauged by improved access to care and service quality for the population. The Dedougou health district, now bolstered by Belgian cooperation, is poised to tackle these challenges with renewed confidence.
Enabel's support in Burkina Faso spans multiple areas, complementing government and local efforts to strengthen community resilience amid security and socio-economic challenges.
