Douala: Two suspected bike thieves nabbed in Akwa

For a long time now, the theft of motorbikes has been rampant at “Ancienne Troisièmes”-Akwa Douala, a busy economic hub.

” It was on a Friday afternoon that I parked my bike to work in the office. When I came out at about 6 p.m., I could not find it again. With the help of a security camera, we discovered that it was stolen by two men. A series of complaints filed by victims at the GMI 2 permitted an operation that resulted in the arrest of two suspects, Mohamadou and Yaouba, both 38 years old.

“Since about three months, we received about 15 complaints from city dwellers in Akwa, their bikes have been stolen. In collaboration with the anti-criminal unit of the Douala Judicial police, upon the authorization of the regional delegate of national security, we were able to arrest the two suspects who showed to the public how they steal bikes.” Awa Christian, head of the anti-gang unit recounted.

Before their arrest, they had stolen at least 50 bikes and sold them on the black market.

“Since they started operating, they stole about 50 motorbikes, via their modus operandi. We have succeeded in recovering five, available for identification and collection. But four have been returned to the owners “. Added Awah Christian, the anti-gang chief.

Assurances have been made, that other motorbike thieves in the city of Douala will be tracked down, alongside their accomplices, known to be middlemen and buyers of these stolen bikes.
