Government of Alberta invests in CCS knowledge sharing hub to advance carbon capture and storage projects across Canada and around the world

Hub initiative demonstrates leadership in climate action by identifying best practices and pathways to bring CCUS projects to life

Regina, Sask. and Calgary, Alta., April 27, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The world’s first open-source repository of knowledge and information about the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS/CCUS) projects will be established by the International CCS Knowledge Centre (Knowledge Centre) with foundational support from the Government of Alberta.

As a key action item included in Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan released April 19, 2023, the Government of Alberta is providing $3 million for the creation of a national CCS knowledge sharing hub that will be an important tool for Canada to meet its ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The mandate of the CCS knowledge sharing hub will be to collect and curate best practices and lessons learned from Canadian CCS projects past, present and future – drawing on knowledge from as many projects as possible from initial planning and feasibility studies, through to construction and ongoing operations – to enhance the success of CCS projects and promote continuous learning and improvement in CCS technology. Expansion of CCS is also a crucial step for creating and maintaining vital jobs in all heavy emitting sectors provincially and nationally in such areas as cement, iron and steel, power generation, petrochemicals, fertilizer, and oil and gas.

“Bringing large-scale CCS projects to life at the speed and scale that is required to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 requires unprecedented collaboration between industry, government, academia and other partners. The most effective way of reducing risk, lowering costs and improving performance of these multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects is to share our proven expertise and apply the experience gained across heavy-emitting industries in order to build a sustainable future for all,” said James Millar, president and chief executive officer of the International CCS Knowledge Centre.

“We are very grateful to the Government of Alberta for stepping up with this critical support, allowing us to launch the CCS knowledge sharing hub and ensure lessons learned from dozens of CCS projects planned across Canada are documented and made available to anyone who can benefit from them,” Millar added. “I would be remiss in not singling out the strong leadership of Environment and Protected Areas Minister Sonya Savage in helping to ensure this initiative moves forward.”

“Carbon capture and storage is a critical part of Alberta’s path to achieving a net-zero economy. With projects such as the Quest CCS facility operated by Shell Canada, and the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, we have led the world in developing CCUS facilities and proving the capability of this technology to drastically cut CO2 emissions from the industries that are the bedrock of our economy and are the lifeblood of our communities. We look forward to working with the Knowledge Centre to ensure that Alberta and Canada remain at the forefront and capture the enormous opportunities that are before us as the world undertakes an aggressive expansion of CCS to curb rising emissions and address climate change,” said Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Sonya Savage.

The CCS knowledge sharing hub will be developed and operated by the International CCS Knowledge Centre to assess and identify best practices and frameworks to get CCS projects to final investment decision. Key to the initiative’s long-term success will be coordination and proactive promotion of the sharing of knowledge on CCS gathered from companies large and small to ensure the timely and efficient transfer of CCS best practices across Alberta, Canada and the globe – outcomes where industry and government jointly benefit. Sharing critical information on the development of projects from study stage into operation will greatly increase the transfer of crucial learnings, leading to better outcomes and inevitably a greater level of CO2 emission reductions in Canada.

At a global level, the world can’t afford not to pursue large-scale CCS as a key tool for meeting international climate commitments. The International Energy Agency and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have concluded a massive investment in large-scale CCS is required in order to achieve the emissions reductions needed to meet the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 2ºC. The IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Synthesis Report Summary for Policy Makers forecast that the cost of climate mitigation would increase by 138 per cent without the application of CCS technologies.

Background:

The International CCS Knowledge Centre provides independent consultation and technical advisory services on large-scale CCS projects around the world, including a number of Alberta companies pursuing CCS projects as part of their long-term sustainability plans, including:

  • Completing the feasibility study (with funding provided by Emissions Reduction Alberta) and supporting front-end engineering and design (FEED) planning for the world’s first full-scale CCS facility on a cement plant at Heidelberg Materials’ Edmonton plant.
  • Supporting early-stage engineering work on CCS projects planned by several members of the Pathways Alliance, a coalition of the six largest oil sands producers that is planning to invest more than $24 billion in CCS and other emissions reduction technologies by the end of the decade in order to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
  • Partnering with Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to provide successful applicants of the ERA’s Carbon Capture Kickstart with up to 200 hours of support on their pre-construction design and engineering studies for carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) projects, with funding provided by ERA. The 11 successful projects represent an estimated $20 billion in capital expenditures in a wide range of industrial sectors, including power generation, cement, fertilizer, forest products and oil and gas.

About the International CCS Knowledge Centre
The International CCS Knowledge Centre is a non-profit organization founded in 2016 by BHP and SaskPower to advance large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects as a critical means of managing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving the world’s ambitious climate goals.

The Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) has saluted all workers and their leadership for their monumental contribution towards the social and economic

development of Ghana over the years ahead of the 2023 May celebration, which falls on May 1, 2022

A statement issued by Mr Dan Acheampong, President, GEA, copied to the Ghana News Agency said the Association extended its heartfelt appreciation to organized labour and all Ghanaian workers on this auspicious day (May Day) when the world celebrates workers.

It said the GEA recognized the profound sacrifices made by Ghanaian workers over the years and commended the unrelenting efforts iof workers n driving the socio-economic development of Ghana.

It said the Ghanaian economy was currently facing severe challenges emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent geo-political tensions, among other reasons.

The statement noted that the situation had no doubt adversely affected all facets of life of the citizenry – workers, employers (business community) and Government et al.

‘We saw the inflation rate rise to unimaginable levels, and the exchange rate of the Ghanaian cedi depreciate rapidly in relation to our major trading currencies, especially the US dollar,’ it said.

‘These led to a significant upward surge in the lending rate, utility tariffs and uncertain direction in the movement of fuel prices.’

It said the implications of these shocks had in no small measure affected Ghana’s business environment, sustainability of enterprises and livelihoods of Workers.

The statement said, in the midst of these economic challenges, organized labour and employers, in the spirit of tripartism, have offered constructive inputs to help shape national policy and implementation of same for accelerated and sustainable economic restoration.

‘May we leverage this opportunity to commend Government for prioritizing the restoration of macroeconomic stability as well as for the tireless efforts it is making to bring the much-needed relief to all workers, businesses and the general population in the shortest possible time.’

It said organszed labour’s chosen theme for this year’s May Day celebration: ‘Protecting incomes and pensions in the era of economic crisis: our responsibility’ is therefore, apt and highlights the need for collective action and solidarity to address the numerous challenges facing Government, employers, and workers in the country today.

The statement said it was important for Ghanaians to remind themselves that enterprises could hardly thrive in an environment of antagonism, hostility, mistrust, and adversity.

It said the GEA was hopeful that both workers and employers would reflect deeply on the importance of a sustained harmonious industrial relations environment going forward.

It said industrial disputes directly affected productivity, profits, workers’ incomes and by extension, pension contributions.

It further urged employers, workers, and their unions to prioritize industrial harmony at the workplace.

‘We must also endeavour to open transparent channels of communication at all levels of our enterprises to promote workplace cooperation and harmony, which are very necessary conditions for sustainable enterprises, wealth creation and higher living standards,’ it said.

The GEA admonished all workers to ponder deeply the correlation between skills development and lifelong learning vis-a-vis their income levels and pensions/retirement income.

Adding that it suffices to indicate that relevant, value-adding higher and sophisticated skills had a significant impact on incomes and pension contributions.

It said superior skills enhance labour productivity, the quality-of-service delivery and products manufactured, which were key features in income generation and gain-sharing.

‘We therefore appeal to our gallant workers to continue sharpening their skills in order to be continuously relevant to the ever-changing labour market,’ it said.

‘This is one key channel through which workers can earn higher incomes which will ultimately translate into better retirement benefits and pensions.’

Commercial drivers, key in tourism development and promotion – Okraku Mantey

Mr Mark Okraku Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture has stressed the need to recognize commercial drivers as key stakeholders in tourism development and promotion.

He said it was time to give a critical attention to the professional and ethical training of commercial drivers to ensure that they acted in conformity with international driving standards.

This would help position them well to compete with other nations and strengthen their roles effectively in the tourism ecosystem and contribute to the tourism value chain.

Mr Mantey was speaking at the launch of the tourism product knowledge training of trainers’ project for some selected commercial drivers in Kumasi, at the Kwame Nkrumah Uni

The training project is to provide basic versatile knowledge of the use of pedagogic methods of driving among drivers across the nation.

The project is targeting about 3,000 drivers this year and had the opportunity to increase the numbers in subsequent years.

It is being funded by the World Bank, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Mr Mantey pointed out that the core message throughout the skills driving training would be conceptualized as a broad set of skills that would be used by drivers as their goals and motives.

He advised participants to interact professionally with tourists who patronized their services and urged them to add more value to their services to contribute meaningfully to the economic development of the country.

Professor Gabriel Eshun, Technical Advisor at Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) asked the participants to use the capacity building training for the betterment of their personal service development.

Defense Counsel of Martinez Zogo’s family to take legal actions against counterpart for assault

Lawyers defending the rights of the family of Martinez Zogo, the Amplitude FM Director, killed in January 2023, say they will not allow the lawyers of accused, Jean Pierre Amougou Belinga go scot-free after violently molesting a member of their team, Bar. Émilienne MINDZEME ONDOA, on Thursday April 27.

On this same day the Centre Court of Appeal rejected another request to release Amougou Belinga on bail.

“While the Court of Appeal of the Centre region (Yaoundé) rendered its verdict, logically rejecting as the law requires, the request for the release of Mr. AMOUGOU BELINGA, our colleague Bar. Émilienne MINDZEME ONDOA, was violently assaulted and taken, in front of witnesses, by Mr. NDOUMOU, Lawyer for Mr. AMOUGOU BELINGA . This intolerable aggression, on law practitioners, will obviously give rise to an ethical report that will be addressed to the Cameroon Bar Association and filing of a criminal complaint with the competent Public Prosecutor”. Assured the defense team leader Bar Calvin JOB.

Bar. Félicité Esther ZEIFMAN, Bar. Hakim CHERGUI, Bar. Emilienne MEDZEME and Bar Calvin JOB constituting the defense counsel of Martinez Zogo’s family in the press release of April 27 underlined that such actions are caused about by frustration.

“Exceptional as they are, we would be wrong not to understand their significance: these facts are clear signs of a beleaguered defense which, when faced with the strict application of the law and the damning charges against its client, begins by compromising herself by blithely violating the professional secrets and instructions that she has sworn to respect and ends up bogged down in a dishonorable radical comportment. Let the supporters of this violence know that the lawyers and the millions of supporters of the family of the martyr Martinez ZOGO will not allow themselves to be intimidated by any corruptor or any powerful, and will contribute with all their energies to the work of truth that the Justice of our country is accomplishing”. Added the Martinez Zogo defense counsel.

It should be noted, this other refusal by the Centre Court of Appeal to favour Amougou’s lawyers for their their client to be released on bail, implies the Vision 4 Tv boss remains in pre-trial detention in the Principal prison in Kondengui Yaounde.
