ADB: diplomatic representations called upon to promote foreign investment

The Burundi Development Agency (ADB) recommends close collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to increase foreign direct investment in Burundi.

“The majority of foreign investors are not informed about business opportunities in Burundi”, lamented Didace Ngendakumana, Director General of the ADB, during a workshop on the reflection of synergy between the ADB and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the promotion of foreign investments, this June 7.

He urges Burundi embassies in different countries to identify and bring together investors to boost foreign direct investment. And to call on these diplomatic representations and the diaspora to inform foreigners about the business opportunities available in Burundi. The objective pursued is to double the number of foreign investors in Burundi each year.

Reforms, he continues, have already been implemented in Burundi to encourage foreign direct investment. “Almost all the factors attracting foreign direct investment are currently available in Burundi”.

Among other things, he emphasizes political stability, security, an attractive investment code and the involvement of the country’s high authorities in promoting business.

According to the ADB, the exercise of attracting investors comes up against certain challenges: the insufficiency of the ADB’s budget for promotional kits, a poorly sensitized diaspora, the language barrier as well as investors disguised as commissionaires. Some workshop participants also regret that Burundi is little known abroad.

For Hermenegilde Niyonzima, adviser to the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Burundi is still a virgin country in terms of investment.

“Sectors such as the production industry, mining, tourism, textiles, agro-food, tanning, fishing, information technology are still to be developed”, he underlines.

And to recall one of the missions of the Burundian diplomatic representations: to inform foreign investors about business opportunities and to make them aware of investing in Burundi.

Note that Burundi has about 30 embassies and consulates located in the four corners of the world.

The celebration of Patriotism Day in Burundi was placed under the sign of a national rebirth

The President of the Republic HE Evariste Ndayishimiye enhanced with his presence the official ceremonies marking the celebration of the National Day of Patriotism which were organized in Gitega, the political capital of Burundi.

The day having coincided with the commemoration of the second anniversary of the unexpected death of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza, Supreme Guide of Patriotism in Burundi, the official ceremonies began with a moment of prayers, meditation and a laying of wreaths on the Mausoleum. erected in the center of Gitega, in the presence of the biological family of the Supreme Guide of Patriotism, Senior Officials of the State and Members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps.

The ceremonies then continued at the Ingoma Stadium where all public institutions were represented, mainly elected officials, senior executives and executives of the State appointed by presidential decree. This second part of the National Day of Patriotism was articulated around four major themes relating to Patriotism developed by national experts with the aim of sharpening the patriotic sense of the leaders present in the audience.

All the speakers were inspired by the History of Burundi, a Nation and a people who were born from the bravery, unity and Patriotism of the founders of the Kingdom of Burundi: “We must consolidate the foundations laid by our ancestors, who have made national unity, identity and pride pillars of our Nation”

They all hailed the legacy of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza who personally invested in bringing all Burundians together around the same ideal, that of a united, prosperous and dignified Burundi:

“President Pierre Nkurunziza reminded us that our diversities are our wealth. He reminded this generation that ethnic divisions no longer have a place in Burundi. To mark the impact of his legacy, his last resting place deserves to bear the name of Mausoleum of the Renaissance”

Engaging on the same subject, the expert Pr Firmin Ndimira indicated that patriotism also and essentially passes through better management of public affairs:

“I salute the leadership of President Evariste Ndayishimiye who is giving new impetus to the socio-economic development of Burundi. The introduction of program budgeting will undoubtedly enable the Government to significantly improve their performance and their impact on the living conditions of Burundians.”

Speaking to enrich patriotic teachings, President Evariste Ndayishimiye welcomed a radical change in the mentalities of Burundians who have definitely overcome ethnic divisions and only aspire to peace and socio-economic development:

“The impact of the legacy of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza is evident today in the love Burundians have for their homeland. Their words and actions increasingly demonstrate their attachment to Burundi and this is reflected in sharply rising national investments. The fallout can also be seen in Burundi’s acclaimed return to the international arena.”

President Evariste Ndayishimiye also welcomes the will displayed by the political and administrative leaders to restore Burundi economically by always making the law prevail in the management of public affairs.

However, the Head of State counts the challenges that remain in the sector of Justice and the Public Service:

“While it is true that the majority of Burundians adhere to the project of national rebirth through a return to the values of Ubuntu and the rule of law, certain mentalities are tough. State officials must pull themselves together and understand that they are accountable to the Burundian people. “

Indeed, President Ndayishimiye insistently recalls that the planning and execution of public policies are the responsibility of state officials who often assume the right to work at a loss with impunity. He indicated that these unproductive attitudes must be fought because they promote poverty, the source of all evil.

Before closing his speech, President Evariste Ndayishimiye invited all participants to observe a minute of silence in tribute to the late President Pierre Nkurunziza, affectionately known as “Sogokuru” by all Burundians.

These official ceremonies were organized in accordance with the Law of June 04, 2021 on the Establishment and Granting of the Status of Supreme Guide of Patriotism in Burundi of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza.

Huawei Announces New Inventions That Will Revolutionize AI, 5G, and User Experience

Company discloses progress in IP, innovation at themed event

SHENZHEN, China, June 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei announced a batch of key inventions as part of its biennial “Top Ten Inventions” Awards at the “Broadening the Innovation Landscape 2022” forum held at its Shenzhen headquarters.

The award is designed to recognize inventions that could create new series of products, become important commercial features of existing products, or that generate considerable value for the company and the industry.

The awarded inventions range from an adder neural network that significantly reduces power consumption and circuit area to a game-changing “optical iris” that provides a unique identifier for optical fibers. It is designed to help carriers manage their network resources, cutting time and costs associated with broadband deployment.

The announcement came in the context of intellectual property rights, the protection and sharing of which Huawei believes is critical to the tech ecosystem.

“Protecting IP is key to protecting innovation,” said Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, Song Liuping. “We are eager to license our patents and technologies to share our innovations with the world. This will help broaden the innovation landscape, drive our industry forward, and advance technology for everyone,” he added.

“Huawei is constantly changing itself, and constantly showcasing to the world the value of IP from China,” said Tian Lipu, President of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property’s China Chapter.

By the end of 2021, Huawei held more than 110,000 active patents across over 45,000 patent families. It has more granted patents than any other Chinese company, has filed the most patent applications with the EU Patent Office, and ranked fifth in terms of new patents granted in the United States. For five straight years, Huawei has ranked No. 1 worldwide in terms of Patent Cooperation Treaty applications.

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s IPR Department, said the value of Huawei patents has seen wide recognition in the industry, especially in mainstream standards such as cellular technology, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs.

“In the past five years, more than two billion smartphones have been licensed to Huawei’s 4G/5G patents. And for cars, about eight million connected vehicles licensed to Huawei patents are being delivered to the consumers every year,” Fan said.

Huawei is also working actively with patent license administration companies in offering “one-stop” licenses for mainstream standards.

“Over 260 companies—accounting for one billion devices—have obtained Huawei’s HEVC patent licenses through a patent pool,” Fan said. He added that the company is in discussions to establish a new patent pool to give the industry “quick access” to Huawei’s patents for Wi-Fi devices worldwide.

Huawei is also discussing joint licensing programs for 5G patents with licensing experts and other leading industry patentees.

Liu Hua, Director of World Intellectual Property Organization Office in China, praised Huawei’s sustained focus on innovation, saying: “We look forward to seeing Huawei continue to take part in high-level global competition with innovation at its core.”

For Manuel Desantes, former Vice President of European Patent Office, given the vast number of changes in the world these days, what matters most is no longer the number of registered patents or inventions. “The IP system should assure that the creations that merit protection are those that bring actual value,” he said.

This marked the third innovation and IP-themed event Huawei has hosted on its innovation practices. Every year, Huawei invests over 10% of its sales revenue into R&D.

In terms of R&D expenditure, Huawei ranked second in the 2021 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. In 2021, the company increased its R&D investment to CNY142.7 billion, representing 22.4% of our total revenue. Over the past decade, Huawei’s total R&D investment surpassed CNY845 billion.
