Open FIESTA alum Nael Hailemariam brings Shenzhen speed to Ethiopia

Nael is the co-founder and CEO of Chapa Financial Technologies S.C. His experiences at SIGS and in Shenzhen have shaped his success as an entrepreneur.

In 2018, Nael entered Open FIESTA to study Internet+Innovation Design, which is a master’s program oriented to advanced interdisciplinary fields in information technology and innovative design. “Open FIESTA gave me freedom.” While at Open FIESTA, Nael took advantage of opportunities to combine his background in engineering with management and leadership.

In early 2020, the National Bank of Ethiopia issued a directive allowing non-banks to offer digital financial services. This was Nael’s chance to bring what he learned during his studies in China to a market he knew well, his home country of Ethiopia. This was also the beginning of Chapa. He devoted himself to bringing the advantages of an online payment infrastructure to Ethiopia.

Nael’s company Chapa successfully received a license from the National Bank of Ethiopia to work with private businesses in May of this year. “Shenzhen speed is also part of the value of our company,” said Nael. Moving forward, Nael and his team will continue drawing upon the Shenzhen culture of innovation and efficiency to expand their business into East Africa and eventually to the rest of the continent. Sinopec and QatarEnergy Ink Long-term LNG Deal

The Deal Will See QatarEnergy Supply 4 million tons of LNG to Sinopec Every year, and the Two Sides Carry out Integrated Cooperation on the Expansion Project of the Northern Gas Field

BEIJING, Nov. 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (HKG: 0386, “Sinopec”) and QatarEnergy have signed a long-term Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) purchase and sales agreement for the annual supply of four million tons of LNG to Sinopec. Both parties will work together on Qatar’s North Field Expansion Project (“the Project”).

The 27-year long-term LNG purchase and sale agreement is an important part of the integrated cooperation between the two sides. Sinopec Chairman Ma Yongsheng and Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy, H.E. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, formally signed the agreement together during an online ceremony.

China and Qatar have enjoyed friendly and close ties while building synergies in the energy sector, Ma said. The healthy level of diplomacy creates a favorable environment for both sides to continuously deepen their cooperation.

“The signing of this agreement aligns with Sinopec’s adherence to green, low-carbon, safe, and sustainable development,” Ma said. “The LNG supply will help meet the demand for natural gas in the Chinese market, but also further optimize China’s energy mix while enhancing the security, stability, and reliability of energy supply.”

BB Energy announces launch of 200,000 Improved Cookstoves’ initiative in Rwanda

LONDON, Nov. 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — BB Energy (“the Group”) has announced the launch of its Improved Cookstove (ICS) Project in Rwanda. In partnership with its local subsidiary Société Pétrolière (SP), and local manufacturer Quality Engineering Company (QEC), BB Energy is supplying energy efficient improved cookstoves to rural communities across Rwanda.

In November 2021, BB Energy signed an MoU with the Ministry of Environment promising to undertake a wide range of initiatives that would further Rwanda’s fight against climate change. Less than a year on, the Group has delivered its first landmark project in the country.

The initiative will provide 200,000 improved cooking stoves to households across the country free of charge. In replacing the traditional three-stone fire cooking method, the new stoves will significantly cut harmful household emissions, such as carbon monoxide, and reduce deforestation. Importantly, the efficiency of the new stoves will decrease the time pressure on women and children collecting wood.

QEC will manufacture the improved cookstoves locally and distribute them to the rural communities. Once the stoves are delivered, an active training plan will be undertaken, wherein QEC representatives will engage with beneficiaries to provide them with the knowledge on how to best use the stoves. By engaging a local enterprise to assist with the operations of the project, BB Energy is creating employment opportunities for more than 100 Rwandans.

Qualifying as a carbon reduction initiative, the project has been submitted to Verra for registration, with details available to the public on the project registry.
