Angola, Serbia sign sports agreement

A cooperation agreement on the field of sports was signed Monday in Belgrade between Angola and Serbia, a source from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MINJUD) has said.

The partnerships cover staff training, sharing of experiences, internships for national teams and training for coach.

On Angola’s side, the incumbent minister Palmira Barbosa, who has been in Belgrade for a three-day working visit, signed the agreement.

The minister is being accompanied by the presidents of the Angolan Football Federation (FAF) Artur de Almeida e Silva, handball (FAAND) José do Amaral “Maninho”, as well as senior staff from the Ministry.

On the 9th of this month, the FAAND president received, at the federation’s headquarters in Luanda, the ambassador of Serbia to Angola, Milos Perisic, with whom he discussed, among several issues, cooperation in this social aspect.

As part of her visiting programme, the minister Palmira Barbosa highlighted on Sunday the qualities of the founder of the Angolan Nation, António Agostinho Neto, while delivering her speech ahead of September 17th, National Hero’s Day.

At an event, organised by the Angolan embassy in Serbia, the minister spoke of the human and patriotic dimension of a man who guided Angola to independence, proclaimed on November 11, 1975

Ambassador Agostinho Van-Dúnem accredited in Belize

Angolan diplomat Agostinho Van-Dúnem was accredited Sunday in Belmopan, Belize’s capital, as Angola’s new non-resident ambassador to this Central American country.

After handing over the letters of credentials to the governor-general Froyla Tzalam, Agostinho Van-Dúnem discussed with the Belize official issues relating to bilateral ties as well as the current international hot topics.

Located on the northeast coast of Central America, Belize achieved its independence on September 21, 1981. But remains historically linked to the United Kingdom as a full member of the Commonwealth.

The government of Belize is based on the parliamentary system with an assembly with two chambers made up of elected MPs and senators appointed based on representation.

Therefore, the Prime Minister is the head of the government and the governor-general is the head of state who represents the British monarch.

It is the only country in the region that speaks English, despite its culture being deeply rooted influenced by the region-based Spanish speaking countries.

The economy is mainly based on the incorporation of offshore companies, agriculture, agrarian-based industry and merchandising, tourism (especially areas linked to diving) and construction.

Sugar is the most important agricultural product and is responsible for almost half of exports, while the banana industry is the country’s largest employer

Scores besiege EC office for limited registration exercise in Krachi East

Scores of residents in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, who have attained 18-years and above on Monday, besieged the Electoral Commission (EC) offices at Dambai to register for their voter ID cards.

They were seen in long queue at the old district Assembly office meant for EC, when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the centre.

GNA also observed both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) busing prospective registrants on Monday, who thronged the EC office for the registration exercise.

Speaking to GNA, Mr Malachi Mensah, agent for the NPP described the process as smooth and quick.

‘The first batch of people, who came along with their national identification card were able to register in earnest,’ he explained.

Mr Mensah said those who came along with guarantors had made the process very slow and attributed the overcrowding to today’s situation.

Mr Richard Sarfo Katanka, the agent for the NDC, described the exercise as peaceful with no issues.

He stated that despite the heavy rain, people kept coming in to register.

Mr Kafui Klutse, the Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), told the GNA that it took less than twelve minutes, depending on the person’s situation to complete and issue a card.

He explained that the process was not complicated, adding that the number of registrants was overwhelming.

Philanthropist donates mattresses, pillows to Bongo District Hospital

Mr Charles Adongo, a Philanthropist and native of the Balungu community in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region, has donated 15 mattresses and pillows to the Bongo District Hospital.

The donation was part of his contribution to supporting the hospital’s dealings with the menace of shortage and deterioration of mattresses.

Making the presentation, Mr Harrison Adongo said it was in fulfillment of a promise made by Charles to support the male ward of the hospital where he had earlier observed the need when his nephew was a patient at the facility.

‘We are, therefore, here as Charles’ family to present these items on his behalf to the hospital administration and plead that the hospital uses it, most especially in the male ward which he visited. It is our hope this widow’s mite of ours will be put to good use and to the appropriate place,’ he added.

Ms Estella Abazesi, the Bongo District Director of the Ghana Health Service, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, thanked Mr Adongo for the gesture and promised that they would be used in the male ward as requested.

She appealed to the residents of Bongo to continue to support the hospital and advocate for the district to also benefit from the government’s flagship programme, Agenda 111, to help improve quality healthcare delivery.

She stated that the facility was upgraded into a district hospital due to the increasing population of the area, hence there was the need for the government to provide the right infrastructure for the provision of standard healthcare of the people in its catchment area.
