Burundi adopts multi-risk mapping

In a workshop on the restitution of risk maps on December 14, the government of Burundi received from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) a multirisk map of Burundi per municipality. The Director General of Civil Protection says that this tool will be useful in the prevention of risks and disasters.

According to Anicet Nibaruta, Director General of Civil Protection and Disaster Management, the mapping referred to five hazards including torrential rains, floods, landslides, high winds and earthquakes.

He said that the terms of reference did not take drought into account when drawing up the map: “Knowing its impact on food and nutritional security, we recommend that the team of national experts be able to integrate this hazard as well as other new risks ”.

Regarding the usefulness of multi-risk mapping, Anicet Nibaruta indicates that it will allow the government of Burundi to better understand risks and disasters in order to better manage them.

“Different actors in national life will refer to it to establish sectoral planning for socio-economic development. These are essentially the sectors of infrastructure, agriculture, town planning, land use planning and land services, ”explains Anicet Nibaruta. He added that we can no longer speak of development without taking into account the concept of risks.

The Director General of Civil Protection recalls that multi-risk mapping is an anticipation and decision-making tool to better prepare for risk management.

For Jérémie Nyogoza, adviser in the Land Titles and National Cadastre Directorate, multi-risk mapping will also be beneficial in the land titles sector: “It will help us to adjust our services with current data as well as appropriate planning in relation to land titles. to the plans we have ”.
He explains that the land titles sector had old maps and cadastral plans that no longer correspond to current realities.

According to him, the cadastral management will have to take climate change into account in the future so that people looking for title deeds or plots for investments will have to be directed to areas that are not at risk.

Of 113,408 displaced people estimated by IOM in September 2021, 83% were displaced by natural disasters. According to the same organization, risk mapping is designed to create a culture of understanding risks that can lead to the creation of early warning systems, contingency plans and mitigation.

Audience granted to a group of sustainable healthcare architecture PAN SANTÉ

This Monday 12/13/2021, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation Mr. Ferdinand BASHIKAKO received in audience a group of sustainable health care architecture PAN SANTÉ, from Germany who wish to invest in the public health sector in Burundi.

Indeed, this group indicated that it has a project to build hospitals in Burundi and to make available the electricity necessary for these hospitals in order to promote public health in Burundi.

 The Permanent Secretary welcomed their wish because the public health sector is among the priorities of the Government of Burundi.

Mr. Ferdinand BASHIKAKO wanted to know how they will be reimbursed for the means that would be used during this work. He also wanted to know if there would be other African countries where they have already set up this project.

 Responding to the questions asked, the members of this group let it be known that for the way of reimbursement, it will be carried out gradually by these hospitals on the basis of their income. For the question of implantation of this project in Africa, they answered that it is already present in Tanzania, and in South Africa.

The Permanent Secretary then asked them to contact the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS in Burundi to present this project.

The EFB participates in the week of French lycées du monde 2021

Like all French high schools around the world, the French School of Bujumbura (EFB) Nelson Mandela participated for the 5th consecutive year, from November 29 to December 4, 2021 in the Semaine des lycées français du monde. This week helped to highlight the strengths and values ​​carried by French education abroad.

During the week, the EFB students visited the vegetable gardens, they were made aware of the challenges linked to climate change in Burundi and the fight against deforestation. The students planted trees in the school and an exhibition was organized around the arts, sciences and sustainable development in the school.

According to Barbara Pompili, Minister for the Ecological Transition of the Government of the French Republic and sponsor of the Week of French High Schools of the World 2021, sustainable development is at the heart of educational programs in all disciplines. This transversal theme was thus chosen for the theme of the 2021 edition of the Week of French lycées du monde: “Arts, sciences and sustainable development: French education to prepare for the world of tomorrow”. The opportunity for the teaching teams and the students to focus on the actions and systems implemented within the establishments and in the classes, in particular through artistic and scientific projects.

With a presence in 138 countries, 543 establishments and 375,000 pupils enrolled from kindergarten to 12th grade in 2021, France is the country with the largest school network beyond its borders. On all continents, French families (1/3 of the global workforce) and many other nationalities (2/3 of the global workforce) choose French education because they appreciate its strengths, including the inclusiveness of all students, equality between girls and boys, excellence, well-being, critical thinking, solidarity, plurilingualism and openness to the world.

The CVR submits its progress report to the President of the Senate

The President of the Senate Emmanuel Sinzohagera received in audience Wednesday, December 15, 2021, a delegation from the Truth Reconciliation Commission (CVR). On the sidelines of this hearing, the vice-president of the CVR submitted to the President of the Senate in the presence of his two vice-presidents, a progress report on the achievements of this commission, fiscal year 2021.

The President of the Senate Emmanuel Sinzohagera welcomed the work done this year by the CVR, a work which, according to him, will allow reconciliation and mutual forgiveness between the Burundians to build a country without conflicts, indicated at the exit of the audience his spokesperson, Gabby Bugaga.

The spokesperson for the President of the Senate also indicated that the law requires the leaders of the CVR to present the report of the achievements to institutions such as the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Vice-President of the Republic, the President of the National Assembly and the Senate.

He indicated that this commission will publicly present the progress report of its 2021 achievements before Parliament in congress on Monday, December 20, 2021.
